Default anyone's steering wheel do this?????

I have a used, '98z28 that i bought with 19,800 miles. When i turned the steering wheel, there was no "dead" spot in the center. It felt tight and precise.

Now at 38,000 plus miles there is a dead spot in the center of the wheel..for e.g. if the steering wheel is in the neutral position (wheels straight facing forward) I can wiggle the steering wheel left or right slightly w/o turning the wheels. is this normal? any fixes? thanks!

darn...that doesn't sound too good.
when i park the car, i turn the wheel either to the full right or full left then make sure the steering wheel locks. could this be putting additional wear on it?

thanks for the reply...
