Default Swaybar installation?

I am installing my rear swaybar, and got a question? It says to torque the endlinks to 16lbs? Well when i do that, they seem loose! Are they supposed to be like that? When i took the original ones out they were tight as F^@$! Are those and the mounts supposed to be a little loose? Please help!

I torqued mine to about 18 lbs and they aren't "loose". Make sure there isn't something caught on the threads binding the nut and giving your torque wrench a false reading. It won't be super-tight because you want them to be able to pivot and move.

Ok.....i feel a little bit of a bind or clunking noise sometimes from my front swaybar i installed. Also, sometimes I can hear the washers jingling a little when i hit a bump or turn. I realize that they probably need to be tightened some more, but it is gonna be more than 18lbs torque! The nut that came with these endlinks has that little rubber piece inside of it, i guess it's some sort of a locking nut? Anyway, that makes the nut go on a lot tighter, and is making my torque reading all screwy. Anyone have any advice? I am about to drive all the way across country, and need to square this away asap! thanks in advance!

You should tighten your end links until the bushings start to bulge. They should not be loose. The bushings should slightly bulge past the washers. Are these new end links?

Stock nylon bushings or aftermarket poly?

The nylon bushings are torqued ... the poly bushings are squeezed down more ...

Want a torque number? I don't know ... look at what you are doing, think about the job it has to do and make a sound judgement.

If it's loose, you OBVIOUSLY need it tighter ...

I just tightened mine until I felt confident it was tight enough... if it feels loose, then tighten it more, regardless of what the torque numbers say it should be.

yeah, they are brand new poly endlinks that came with my Spohn swaybars. What about the actual sway bar bushings? Do the same for them too?

You shouldn't be able to overtighten those too much based on the design of the brackets.

A couple years ago I talked with some engineers at Energy Suspension, Prothane (sp?), and one other bushing manufacturer (can't recall the name). I was asking advice about a bushings and various applications. None of the engineers knew I had talked with other companies, but one thing each engineer made sure to mention was how to tighten down the bushing bolts. They said the best method for ensuring the bolts were properly torqued was to tighten them down 'til the spacer could only be turned with difficulty. That's assuming you're an average guy and don't spend all of your spare time lifting weights.
