Default BumpStop Grinded Off..

Hey guys. I grinded my bumpstops off my car awhile back to run some 295x35x18's out back without bashing in the fender well.

Well.. time to drastically lower the car and I was wondering.

I hear of "helpers" that go inbetween the springs like the OLD DAYS to not have the spring compress too much and have the tire and rear go through the floorboard.

Anyone know where I can get them?

I am running DMS springs.

Have you thought about the bump stops that slip over the shock shaft. Ive thought about taking off my bump stops becuase the pro kit dosent have enough spring rate in the rear for the way I drive, but then I dont want to risk blowing my shocks out either.

hmmmmm who sells them stangkiller?

Woudl this interfere with the hose mod for the dms? You put a hose on the top of the spring so it doesnt have metal on metal.

What Trackbird didn't say was the result was two busted rear shocks. I know others will claim to have done it with no issue. But Kevin didn't know his rear shocks were broken either, and they were, quite broken.........

thanks guys.

Sam.. if I put bilstein Revalve HD's out back with the helpers.. would that be an issue as well?

I dont have bumpstops anymore. I wish I did.. but I dont and the car NEEDS to be lowered and I have 295x35x18;s out back.

Tell me what to do!

I'd weld in a piece of metal and put OEM type stops back on if it were me.

If you bottom a shock, it will not be warrantied. Bilstein's should be a touch better than Koni's since they don't have as much stuff inside to break. But they also have a gas section that itself shortens travel vs. a twin tube shock too.....

The best way to fix your issue is to fix the issue. Band-aids here are just that. You might get a while from a quick fix, or break in a month. Hard to say. Better to do it right IMHO.

Sam is right about trackbird's results. I blew my rear koni's as well using just the 55mm Koni stop with no packers. If you still decide to do this, use enough packers to make sure the shock will not bottom out on its self.

If you do know some one that welds, it would be really easy for them to fab up a plate to replace the factory stop. I have given up on the Koni stops (for the time being) and went to using the big yellow Z28 bumpstops.

bringing this back up, i have heard the rear hit the bump stops on my car with bmr springs and bilsteins shocks for the slp cars in the back too. so it sounds like i should leave the bump stop, maybe cut a little bit of it off for added clearance?

Yup, and yup. I did smash a set of Koni DA's that way. (I'm not sure how I missed this thread the first time). Others with other shocks have done it, and many like it. I can only speak from experience with Koni DA's and can tell you that you must be careful or you will risk damage to $500+ worth of shocks.

My 315's hung off the bump stop mounts when I jacked the car up from the frame rails. I was able to Dremel off the parts that were catching the insides of the rims, then mount the bump stops back on. Jacking the car up from the differential housing negates the issue, but if I ever have a flat or have to take my car to a shop, I would have to be extra careful, something many shops (like my local tire shop) are not.
