GM likes to save weight, but they like to avoid lawsuits
(steering gear and suspension do not seem to get the
same shave job over time, as other parts) and the cost
of a stamped, spot welded clamshell with robot-tacked
features I'm sure is less in production than a weldment
that looks to me to have maybe 20 chops and all kind
of odd shaped full bead welding. That kind of thing is
not how you pump out volume models. It's not batch
production, it's hand job and a process control nightmare.
Which brings us back to the weld cracking.
For what it's worth, I inspected mine today and it shows
no sign of cracks so far. Though I do try to baby it.
