I'd find a new friend. Preferably one with some common sense who won't take a chance of getting you all killed.

You ask, we answer.

So True

public roads are not well maintained tracks, what happens when you hit that pothole that just opened up on that corner? or meet the older guy and his wife walking the dog just around the corner? or meet that dumb *** coming the other way in your lane?

seriously, we just had a car load of kids (4 of them) all die in a wreck not 2 miles from my house. going way too fast on a posted 25mph corner. now there's crosses and flowers and makeshift memorials all over that area on the road.

I rode with a freind of mine that drove like this when I was 16-17... I'm goddam lucky I never got killed, and I was goddam stupid for riding with him.

just my 2 cents. stay safe...

WRX's, STI's, and EVO's will kick your fbody butt on the turns, assuming the driver knows how to drive. As hinted at in a few of the other posts, the driver counts for much more than the car type on an autoX or road course. As far as improving the car, #1 race tires, #2 Koni shocks, #3 weight reduction. Forget about power adders. So take an Evolution driving school, then get 300 lbs off your car and you will be good to go. Then challenge him to an autoX to keep things safe.

I autoX race against ralley cars all the time. I beat them if the driver doesn't know how to drive, but the good drivers beat me. On a long, straight, desert road, none of them can touch me, though! The last Evo I raced topped out at 140 mph.

Exhibit A:

You'll notice that we've been trying very hard to get these cars out of our class. They really are "that fast" when prepped properly. Stock for stock, it's more fair, but after optimizing each car, the WRX/EVO crowd gain some serious advantages and have been giving us some fits.
a hyundi accent prepped properly will beat cars in an auto-x.....point being..his car stock..with shitty tires....and turbo lag will make him loose if this other guy can drive...i don't know how many auto-xs are done in the rain..but its probably a stupid idea for an fbody to particpate in that....specially against a car with AWD.

We don't exactly order rain. But if it rains, we race. We usually lose, but we race.

We have an evo that is mostly stock that shows up at our local events. He is running his street tires (which are pretty sticky, but not true race rubber) and has been beating prepped ESP cars on the local level (several events he hit a cone and that's what kept him out of first place, the 2 second penalty....which is a ton of time on an autocross course). These cars are not the understeering, turbo laggy things you give them credit for. They can be very fast, even dead stock, around an autocross course. I'd love to be able to tell you that "Fbodies rule and nothing can beat one", but the reality is that a well driven AWD car can be a real handful for us. Don't discount one so quickly. That's all I'm saying.

i'm not saying that the EVO is that way...that car is completely different...but a STOCK wrx with the all season shitty stock tires and laggy(a car only making 227flywheel hp...and not producing full boost till 3krpms or a lil more) turbo isn't gonna perform....a stock evo is a different story..i never said the stock evo is an understeerign laggy car..i said a stock wrx is that. its gonna take a much much beter driver to take a stock wrx against an stock SS in an autocross then it would with an evo.
and when did i say fbodies can't be beat? throw an lotus elise in there and try to see everyone keep up...or a john works cooper S...mr2s....NEONS...an rx7(specially stripped down with a nice single turbo and fat slicks)...there are lots of cars out there...your assuming to much about me (I've owned an rx7, a focus, a sentra spec V(with a good driver...very good auto x car specially with the stock lsd...jsut trun the wheel and punch the gas.)). the only car i said was crap is a stock wrx.

I was thinking STI, not a stock WRX. The stock WRX is less of a threat (stock for stock) and the Evo is about the same as the STI. I don't really think of a "base" WRX anymore because nobody seems to buy them (we usually are concerned about the STI version, it's the one we see). So, I guess I should remember that there is still a regular WRX.

lol...yes...and i see 5 wrx for every sti..but thats on the street..i guess when people buy thaqt car..they actually race it....and the sti is a lil less laggy because fo the extra .5 displacement....so its a different car. the newer wrxs are gonna have the extra .5 displacement though...so they aren't gonna be as crappy.

Interesting article.

I was in a head on collision riding with my buddy when he lost control of his 97 v6
Camaro on a sharp and blind right turn. He lost control, stayed in it and overcorrected causing us to go into the oncoming lane and hit an old lady in a Firehawk. Dumb luck huh. We were all ok but he did 7000 damage to his car and about the same to the Firehawk.

Before that I was in a buddies car who thought he could be a pro rally driver after only having his license 2 wks. He flipped the car 2 1/2 times at about 55 mph. I had nightmares for 2 weeks after I got back from the hospital.

Or just run him in the quarter.

Why even worry about it? You're really comparing apples to oranges here. F-Bodies really aren't the most nimble of cars stock. Comparing it to a Vette, the F-Body is heavy, and has a solid rear axle. There are many other differences that causes them not to handle near as well but with a few suspension mods and driver skill, an F-Body can outrun a stock Z06 on a track.

I mentioned racing in the rain.... Here's the results from E Street Prepared (reasonably well modified cars, but still street driveable) from the national championships this past week. They ran in the rain and you'll notice how many AWD cars were there, and how well they did (there was a Mustang Cobra in 6th). These things are evil in the rain (since the results are up, I figured I'd share them. Now you see why I was thinking STi, that's most of the WRX's there.).

http://scca.org/Event/Result.asp?Ref2=60

Edit. I just found out that the 6th place cobra driver was actually in a WRX STI and not a cobra as it is listed.

I took my bro-in-law's Evo for a test drive on a twisty road in the rain; absolutely incredible traction! I never got either end to break loose. I have to admit these are great cars; but why do they have to be so damn ugly?

Like the pontiac Firebird Trans Am and Camaro Z/28 were originally created for entry into the earlier SCCA Trans Am, the WRX and the Evo were created for the WRC, which are mostly compact sedans. Kind of sux that there isn't an official class of vehicles that are equipped with a similar package, but appear more like a sport coupe (a la Celica GT All-Trac).

4th gen cars will get out handled by 3rd gen cars

4th gens have spongey shocks and not so good springs to give it a much more comfortable ride, get some adjustable Konis, QA1s or Blitzens along with some properly match springs and it will be like poping your car a gigantic blue pill, but remember, if its like that for more than 4 hours immediately seek medical attention..

These are the F-stock results from the autocross nationals this past week. Now, it's not the answer, but it's interesting to note that the 3rd gens are in 6th place, not too "unequal". F-stock requires stock springs, stock rear sway bars, no SFC's, no LCA's, etc. So, these cars are typically "Koni's and a front sway bar" (and alignment and a few tweaks, but rather stock).

With that said, I miss my third gen.
