Default WRONG Caliper??

I ordered a new front driver side caliper for my Z28 and once i took the old one off i noticed they aren't the same...What is going on??? Obviously the shiny one is the one I bought but look at the spacing between the pistons?

18042491 and 18042492 are the GM part numbers for the 98+ V8 F-cars ...

The V6 should be the same as the V8 from 98 and up (as I remember, am I wrong?). That actually looks like the set that came off of my friends 99 Mustang GT when we swapped it to the 13" cobra brake kit. I can't swear that it's a ford caliper, but it sure looks like one.

are the pistons smaller? I see the spacing difference but i think the c5 calipers just have smaller pistons, nothing else. so they may not be c5 calipers.

It's not a V6 or a vette calipers. The V6 ones are the same as the V8 ones. The Vette ones are the same as both but pressure cast with smaller pistons. I think that is a mustang caliper, like trackbird said.

As far as I know, GM used identical brake parts for both cars (why stock two sets of parts?) and the new CMC guidelines state you can swap to "any 98-02 front brakes (and possibly rears)". Al had a thread on it in frrax.

Found it:

http://frrax.com/rrforum/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=2513&

The Mustang caliper was on a smaller rotor, and you have to push the pistons together to get them to fit within the radius of the smaller diameter rotor. That's my best guess (only because they look familiar).

I could be wrong Mitch, but the calipers look the same from the outside. I have not checked the part numbers to see if they are the same. Why would GM go to the cost and trouble to make a different V6 front caliper? When it's just as easy to put the same ones on as there LS1 counter parts.

The C5 and Z06 (C5 Z06, not C6) calipers have 40mm pistons. LS1 F-body brakes have 44mm pistons. I forget what the mustang has.

Actually, the LS1 brakes are 44.9 MM. I actually measured the ones I bought b4 I put them on. The .9 MM makes a difference, 125 MM area total.
