Default Master cylinder kits...differences?

I went to my mechanic today because my brake pedal was going almost all the way down to the floor and my brake performance was lacking. He told me I most likely needed a new master cylinder. Anyway, he quoted me at $205 for a rebuilt or $217 for a new one ( ). I told him I'd think about it.

Anyway, I found the master cylinder on gmpartsdirect.com (p/n 18026276) and it's going for $133.50 + shipping ($29.37) = $162.87. If I bought this, would I be able to just hand it over to my mechanic and have him install it? Would he need any other parts on top of the kit from gmpartsdirect.com? Or could he be getting more with the kit hes ordering? I'm not too familiar with all the parts you need for a master cylinder, I'm just wondering if there's a package with just the master cylinder and like a complete installation kit..

Thanks

P.S. He's also quoting me at about $275 to do the job (that's parts and labor included). Does that sound fair?

LS1 master cylinders are pretty rugged.

Unless you have badly contaminated fluid which caused corrosion, I'd take it to another mechanic.

What's the problem then? Can I just get a rebuild kit?

well.. don't snap at me if you've already checked this.. but the first thing to do is bleed the brakes... air in the lines gives you a mushy pedal...

after that... stock rubber hoses should be checked and maybe upgraded to braided stainless steel brake lines

I don't know what the problem. tough to diagnose through a keyboard ...

However, the ONLY master cylinder I've ever seen fail was when a synthetic DOT 5 fluid was used instead of a DOT 5.1

It sounds like you have severely worn pads and rotors ...

Thanks for the input mitchntx...may I ask where you get your experience from? Are you a mechanic? Or have you worked on many f-bodys? Just curious...

In any case, if they are in fact worn would you suggest just replacing the pads/rotors first?

I'm just a hack that has gone through more than my share of brakes ...

Yes, most definitely, if the pads and rotors are worn ... replace them.

hmm...usually the master cylinder only needs to be replaced if you're sitting there and the pedal slowly sinks to the floor instead of staying firm where you have it at. Just caused by one of the 4 seals on the 2 pistons inside leaking and not holding pressure. I'd bleed the system too first off and check all of the rubber hoses while you're at it. good luck

Well my damn brake pad just fell apart this evening . Luckily I was right near my friends shop. I'm doing the brakes first (Hawk HPS Brake Pads and re-cut rotors if they're still good). Hopefully this will solve my problem
