I have a buddy had a wicked vibration and noise (wom, wom, wom) it started at around 50 - 60 and kept going, got really ugly at 90 + it was very bad.
We ran the car on a frame lift with him varing the speed in 4th gear and you could here the wom, wom, wom comming from the drive shaft as it turned.

We tried swapping drive shafts, etc, etc, etc. nothing helped.

The only mod on the car was a 3.42 to 3.70 gear change a few years ago.

To make really long story short it turned out the transmission output shaft was bent. We sent the trans out (M6) and they replaced the slightly bent shaft.
There hasen't been one bit of vibration or noise since.

Hope this helps someone.

I think either that or my flywheel is what is causing my issue. My vibration isn't that bad so I'm wondering if it's the poly motor mounts.

That would do it too. The stiffer the mounts, the more vibration.

okay I'm going to add to the problem list, sorry if it's a little different....
I just raised my car from Eibach pro-kit w/SLP Bilsteins to SLP Eibach (Level 2) springs with Hal adj. shocks in front and SLP Bilsteins rear. i did this for extra clearance for the STS kit. I did the swap myself and then had it aligned. I also lengthened the adj. PHR for the height increase (eyeballed the wheels being on center) this didn't help. When driving I have to constantly hold pressure to the left on the steering wheel. I thought it might be the alignment but there isn't much steering wheel vibration, more like the car is being "pushed to the right" on top of this it feels as if the rear is "swaying" back and forth. It feels like it keeps moving in a direction and then binds and then pops back only to start the cycle all over. Also, i hear some noises coming from underneath the armrest and have noticed that I can hear my tranny move on its mount on a hard clutch release. Now i get the 65-80 vibration a little bit but i noticed if i'm at that speed and i hit the brakes about 90% or greater, the pass. rear makes a noise like a wheel hopping. Could having a mis-adjusted PHR cause this? Another thought is: can a torque arm be bent in a lateral direction, causing the swaying motion?
All of this started after the spring/front shock swap. Before that no problems except for worn tie-rods which were replaced with Baer Trackers (16 months ago). Also, tire have not shown any uneven wear after 1000+mi.
Sorry if this isn't closely related but i figured it was a lowered car with vibration/steering related problems.
Thanks!

Are your LCA's adjustable?? It sounds as if your rear is doglegging a bit and causing you to compensate with the steering wheel. Check the rear for squareness in relation to the front. Just a thought, did you have a 4 wheel alignment done??

No my LCAs aren't adjustable. I haven't had a 4-wheel alignment done although that thought did cross my mind. I think i'll make an appointment for that and if it isn't the answer-i'll go from there.

The factory steel driveshaft is the first place to look at solving high speed vibration - especially on an unmodded car. There was a factory bulletin on it in the mid 90's that instructed replacement with the aluminum driveshaft. I had a horrible vibration at 90+ with each of my 94 Formulas and both times aluminum driveshafts solved the problem.

Yeah, it does seem that a lot of people having similar problems also have steel driveshaft, but then a lot of people also say they replace them and it didnt fix the problem???? like i said im replacin all the bearings in the rear and getting an adj TA to play with the pinion angle, then we will see if its still there.

PS- How do you check to see if the output shaft is bent, because im pretty sure my TA is a lil bent, and i heard there was a corelation between bent TA and bent output shafts....esp with steel drive shafts.

We checked everthing changed drive shafts etc.
I finally called D&D transmission in Wixom Mich. after many days of thrashing.
I beleive I spoke to someone named Joe, after I told him all of the things we had checked he suggested the output shaft . We sent the tranny in and he verified it was bent ever so slightly. They replaced it and the car drove like new.
By the way this car had a steel drive shaft (1996 LTI) and I must say he had a lot of wheel hop which may have helped to cause the problem.

Good Luck, let us know how it turned out.

There is no 4 wheel alignment on our cars; only the front can be adjusted.

No, they are not run of the mill, they do all kinds of m6 work including up grades with the latest parts.
I have had 3 m-6's done by them and had very good luck thus far.

I realize that. What I was referring to was aligning the front tires in relation to the rears. If the rear end isn't square in relation to the frame, they align the front wheels to be "out of square" the same amount as the rear. Now the car steers as if all four wheels and tires are square to the frame. It's works kind of backwards from the proper way to do it, but for most people (the general public) it's the easy way out. The proper way to do it would be to square the rear to the frame at home, then take it up and have it aligned. At least this is the way I understand it to be. Somebody please correct me if I'm mistaken.

Long after I gave up the search for the cause of my vibration, I found my engine mounts were TOAST. Problem solved.

Well... since your car is a '97,
I don't know if engine mounts are your problem but I can pretty much gaurantee your engine mounts are done for. I would put them on the list of things to do.
My vibration wasn't really a wom wom wom though.

Tip: Decide what you think you'll be replacing in the next year and then replace the bushings on everything else. ie get some polyurethane sway bar bushings and endlinks. They are cheap and make a huge difference on an older car. I'm going to be getting some subframe connectors ...another mod that is supposed to be a drastic improvement for older cars.

How many miles were on your car when you replaced the mounts? I have 46K right now, I cant see them being worn out yet...

My car's a 98 and I had 80k miles on them and they were completely thrashed. When I took them out they just fell apart since the rubber was dry rotted and torn.

Was it a tingley/buzzy sort of vibration that became more pronounced after the converter locked up??? (especially at lower RPM's) That's what I'm getting right now. (mine's a '98 with just over 50K)
