Dash brake lights on '96 Z28
Hi,
I'm in the market for a 93 or newer Z28. One that I looked at is promising with just a few issues that I am trying to figure out the cost of to fix.
One issue is that the idiot lights are on for "Brakes" and for "ABS" on the instrument panel.
I drove it and the brakes feel fine.
The owner says that it just needs a brake job, but I'm concerned about the ABS light being on that it might be more than just replacing the pads and cutting the rotors.
Does anyone have any insight into what might be causing these lights to be on?
Is it likely that a standard brake job could turn the lights off?
It's a 1996 Z28. 134,000 miles
Thank you.

Thanks for the response. That's what I was afraid of, since the car is about 3 hours away from me.
I'm also thinkig that it could just be that it's low on brake fluid. That's one thing I didn't think of checking when I was looking at it in person a few weeks ago.
That would be great if it were as simple as that.
I guess I could ask the owner to check that and if it's low, add fluid and see if the lights go off.

On my '98 the brake light can come on if there is an ABS problem, if the 3rd brake bulb is shot, or if the fluid level is low.
I don't remember if the 3rd brake light can turn on the ABS light though.
The ABS light can be from a bad (or unplugged) sensor at the wheel, or from the ABS fuse being shot (or pulled).

John_D and keliente, thanks for your replies. Both are helpful.
I hadn't thought about the possibility of a bad fuse, but definitley something to ask the owner about, since there was at least one fuse missing from the panel, that I recall when I saw the car a few weeks ago.
Also, thanks for confirming that there is not an electronic low pad indicator.
I would definitely bring it to a shop to get the codes, but the car's 3.5 hours away, so I'm trying to go through a process of elimination to see if it's something simple. If I can't nail it myself (with the owner's help), I'll just forget it and look for something to come up closer to home.

Britdog if it is something you REALLY want, you should consider making a post in whatever regional forum you are from...chances are there is a member who lives near that car who could check it out for you.
Otherwise, keep looking, I promise it won't be the last 93 & up Z28 for sale
