Default Help with Hotchkis STB

I just installed one on my car last night. I'm happy with the stiffness and cornering of the car now, but my dashboard rattles. Something's not right. I bought it used from the board here. I emailed the guy I bought it from today to see if it's designed for my '00 or not. The problem is that the middle of the STB (the part with the 3 holes) ducks under the part that seals the hood. Sorry, not sure what it's called. The STB vibrates and shakes that part which causes the dash to rattle.

Do I have the wrong STB or what?

This is an email Gordon sent me regarding this:

"Dan,

That's wierd, I never had that problem at all when it was on my car.

The only thing I can think of is, did you install the two shims correctly? They go on a certian way. double check the shims, and if that's not it, you can send it back to me and I'll refund your money if you want.

Sorry to hear your having this problem.

BTW, while I was at Thunder Racing dyoning my car today, I asked Jason99TA just to make sure if the STB was year specific, and he said it fits all 98-02 F-bodys, like I thought it did.

Again, if your not satisfied with it, send it back and I'll take care of you.

Gordon"

/\ This guy is a class act. I'd like to say that Gordon was a pleasure doing business with and he sold me a very good product. I'm sure the problem lies with me.

Do NOT hesitate to do any kind of business with him. He's awesome!

I'm going to work on this tomorrow (Sat.). I'll post the results.

The STB should not touch that part of the engine bay. Mine is about 1/2 inch lower at that point. Ask the guy if the car he had it on had been wrecked and bent or something. It shouldn't touch.

Did you use the leveling plates?

It looks like you did but kinda hard to tell.

That's what I thought. It doesn't look like it was bent at all. It's in very good shape. I don't think I installed it incorrectly. There's pretty much only one way. I'll go take a pic of it now. It'll be up in a while.

I have four pics. Anyone want to host them for me? I'll see if I can do it in the meantime.

Well, I went and looked at mine.

Things I noticed are...your brackets are right...I don't think you COULD switch them.

Your bar is right side up. The install looks correct.

I did notice that my tranny dipstick is a good inch below the bar but my oil dipstick has always rubbed the inside of the front bar. When I looked under the cowl, I just noticed that the center plastic "push screw" is resting on the top of the bar and is actually pushed up some through the trim.

Maybe you could remove that push screw and see if that makes a difference or is your stb actually touching metal?

The STB is only touching that little push screw. With Gordon's help, I think I found the problem. The passenger side leveling plate is not on correctly. I'm not sure how much of a difference that'll make. I'm going to fix that in a little bit. I'll post the results.

I had to bend the trans fluid and oil dipsticks out of the way. I'll probably bend the trans fluid one a little more.

Ok, I completely removed and re-installed it. The leveling plates and the brackets are mounted correctly. It fits around the oil dipstick tube a lot nicer now. It doesn't touch anything under the dash thing now. The tranny dipstick tube rests on the bottom of the STB though. That may vibrate, not sure yet. The STB still sits really far back on the motor though just like in the pictures I've posted.

Overall, I really don't care about the appearance. This is performance mod anyway. It looks fine actually. It's just not the same as everyone elses. No big deal. I'm happy with the STB and it's performance. I'm still not sure why it sits weird though. Oh well, it's on and it works!

Thanks for your help.

Good deal Dan,
You could probably bend the tranny tube down some more if there's room to.

If the bar's still too close to the cowl lip,
maybe sleeve it in heater hose or something
else to keep metal from buzzing metal? It may
be in interference then, but quiet.

You probably somehow got one of those knock-off "Hotkis" STB's.
