Default I need help I ready to throw a bomb in the CAR!!

One of my OEM torque arm bolts backed out of my Moser 12 bolt completely and thats why my ARM tore apart. Anyway I got used arm to replace it with for now, and I will be GO#D!MNED if I can get the mount back in! I have the rear of the car about 10 inches off the ground with jackstands on the rear frame rails and the trans crossmember removed with a floor jack holding the trans. I can't get the damn top hole in the tailshaft of the trans to line up enough to get the bolt back in to clamp it together !!!!! I even tried c-clamps to squeeze the mount closer so I could start the bolt but the holes aren't lined up and the won't line up. Am I doing something wrong here or what?

Put a floor jack (bottle jack, etc) under the shock mount and use the jack to rotate the axle until the holes line up (I have always had to do this to get the torque arms back on every car I've had apart and that's alot of them). Once you get the axle rotated, start the bolts and use the jack again to line up the other holes if necessary. This should get you back in business with minimal fuss (and throwing of tools). Good luck.

I left my trans mount bolted in the chassis, loosened the bolts for the torque arm mount and slid the torque arm in the trans and held it up beside the rear and used the jack to rotate the axle until I could gently tap it on with a rubber mallet and I'd line up the holes with a 1/4 ratched extension (or a 3/8 extension). stick the extension in the hole and wiggle it in a circle until the hole is centered....drop in bolts.....thought I'd better clarify my technique. Good luck.

ok let me get this straight: unbolt the torque arm rear mount and take it off the 12 bolt housing. Install the front clamshell mount to the trans first then use my floor jack under one of the rear shock mounts and jack up the rear until I can tap on the bracket? I have a poly mount on the front so its much stiffer then the OEM rubber one. Do I have this down right? Also I think I should use loctite too, if I ever get it back together!

That's how I do it. I loosen the clamshell (but leave the trans bolted down tight). I slied the torque arm in until it is in "roughly" the right place and "swing" it over onto the rear axle (use the jack under a shock mount to "roll" the axle into position so the torque arm will mount up and line up the holes with a ratchet extension. Drop in the bolts and tighten the clamshell). That has always worked for me. Loctite....never a bad idea....

You are using a stock torque arm, right? I'd leave the mount on the axle and take the torque arm off the mount and then use the jack to line up the axle mount to the torque arm by jacking up the rear of the axle. I've usually done this on 10 bolts but the 12 bolt should be about the same. When you remove the torque arm, the axle rotates to the rear (the pinion is higher from the ground than is should be...in most cases). You may need to loosen the rear sway bar to make your life easier.

I'm headed to bed. I hope that helped out and you got it all reassembled. Drop me a line and let me know what happened (trackbird@columbus.rr.com).

ok, so I am going to completely remove the arm and then insert the front bushing/mount into the clampshell and the tighten the bolt a bit then roll the rear mount onto the housing. Have you ever done this using a poly-urethane mount?

OEM or poly mount shouldn't matter.

I 5' long TA will give plenty of leverage to move the arm over.

I've used the "trackbird techique" numerous times.

Insert the TA in the front mount, move the TA towards the rear housing, rotate the diff with a jack as needed, use some sort or alignment tool (1/4" drive extension, screwdriver, anything that will fit in the holes), drop in bolt one (from the top, BTW), then insert bolt #2 (might have to tweak some more for #2 alignment).

Torque settings on the rear nuts are FREAKING TIGHT!

Add another person to the list that has successfully used this technique.

Installing the TA via this method still isn't what I would call easy, but it's certainly the easiest method I have found (short of getting someone else to install the TA for you... )

Good luck.

I removed my swaybar to get my T/A to line up by jacking up on the rear. On the front I had to use a ratcheting 'come along' to pull the T/A in so I could bolt the clamshell in. It is a pain in the *** for sure!

I finally got it but I need to replace one of the bolts since I lost one. Is there a better bolt that I can use. My Moser 12 bolt uses the crap 4 bolts that back out. I think we should find the guy who designed this torque arm set-up and beat the hell out of him. Its an understatement to say its a pain in the ***.

Glad to hear that you finally got it installed. I have never had much problem putting these things on (but I broke my 700-r4 11 times in my 89 Formula and then swapped in a 5 speed and killed 3 clutches back to back....between that and 6 speed swaps in friends cars....I've had lots of practice). As far as bolts, I'd hit the hardware store and break out the loctite. Some of these guys may have better bolt recomendations than I do (I'm shopping for 12 bolts....any advice?).

aka 14u2nv

I have a 12 bolt through Rapid Motorsports, i believe its a Moser unit but assembled by a local guy. I think the Mosers are the ones have these problems with these short 4 bolts backing out. I hear the Strange unit may use the same style as the OEM 10 bolt(2 long bolts) and it isn't having these porblems but it is a bit more $$$.

I appreciate the info on the 12 bolts. I may have to check prices and compare (may lean towards a strange). Thanks.
