Default Autocross Tires?

I was wondering how much better or what is different between a heat cycled tire and a full tread tire. I ran a couple autocross events last year and now am looking at some kumho's for some added grip, also does anyone know if there is a cheaper alternative tire than the kumho's for a 16 by 8 wheel. Thanks for any help

Maybe the correct question is a full tread vs. a shaved. The shaved tire will last longer. Especially with the Kumho's, they have a tendancy to chunk if you try to run full tread depth.

I used Kumho v700's last year. Not shaved or heat cycled and they worked fine all year for 8 autox's. Then I flipped them. Then used them for a track w/e, and will use them for a few more autox's until they're gone.

IMO, Kumho is the best bang for the buck. They are about half price of Hoosier and last about twice as long.

The Kuhmo is by far the best value in a hobby roadrace & autocross tire.

The heat cycling is a good idea, the tires will last longer. You can, however, do it yourself.

You need to be able to get out on the road & get them hot (like run at 80 or so for a bit). Then take them off & let them sit for at least 24 hrs before running them at the track.

I run them not shaved.... they'll build up a bit more heat due to tread squirm, but you'll have a bit longer overall life.

Use the 265/45/16s on those wheels. that's what's on the car in this photo.

To properly heat cycle tires you need to get them up into the 150 range or so. Running them on the highway will not do that. The best way to do that is to run figure 8's in a parking lot somewhere until to reach 150 degrees. Check them with a probe type pyrometer. Pull them off the car and let them sit for 24 hours. Check the site.

This is an incorrect statement. You'll have less tire life if you DON'T shave your tires. The "tread squirm" causes the tire to tear at the base of the tread causing chunking.

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking of using a 245/45 tire, you dont think a 265 tire would be too wide for an 8 inch rim?

I wouldn't think you would run into the chunking problem if you are AutoXing it. Open track events and roadracing is a different thing. If you are not really into the very last hundredth in your autoxing {as in it for fun}, I wouldn't worry about the heat cycling or the shaving thing. Just cost more money.

It would take a really long autocross course to build up enough heat to chunck a set of Kuhmos (Nothing is impossible, but it is highly unlikely). For track days (or the silver state challenge) I'd shave them for sure. I used to autocross a 2000 VW GTI VR6 and it took 3 events to get the stickers worn off the rear tires (and the fronts were just starting to show actual wear). I'd buy them full depth and go autocrossing. I bought a set of semi used Eagle GS-CS tires from an AMerican sedan racer this year to use for autocrossing (pretty much takes care of the shaving part and I paid $50 for 4...and they should go all season). Good luck.
