Default creaking after roll bar install???

I put my signature up so you can see all my other mods. Two weeks ago I installed a bolt in Wolfe 6 point roll bar with swing outs. Since then, I have noticed a lot of creaking when I go over speed bumps or torque up the body (lifting the car, accelerating, braking, etc...). I have put silicone inside the swing outs to get rid of any rattle/noise from them.

Anyone have any ideas about how I could be getting MORE noise after having installed a roll bar? I never had creaks before this. It sounds like the body is twisting between the front connection and main hoop connection but how the hell could it be doing that???

Any input would be a help,

Chris

The problem here is, that it's a "bolt-in" roll cage. They aren't very effective unless they are welded in. Unless they connect to the firewall and really connect the whole car, they just look cool. When a bolt is used to take the place of a good weld, you have a less rigid structure. The cage tubing flexes and rubs on the body of the car, because it pivots on the bolting points and that causes the creaks. It would be much more to your benefit to weld it in.

So what your saying is I should go back, roll the carpet back, and weld the bolt plates to the body? Would that get rid of the noise?

Yes, I would weld the bolt plates. It will help reduce the creaking. It would only help your cage perform more efficiently, especially after having spent the money to obtain it and the time to put it in.

Thats what I thought....but wanted a second on it. I guess I will roll the carpet up this weekend and run a few good beads around the plates.

That should not take too long. I already have it installed and located with the bolts so I'm just fixing it permenant.

Thanks

Chris

If it still creaks after welding, there is a good chance that the mounting points are flexing (on the body), you may consider using a steel plate from the botom side or a piece of boxed steel tubing (like frame rail material) to tie it to the pinch weld under the door or to your subframe connectors. This should stiffen things a lot more. Just my thoughts....good luck.

thanks guys.....

I welded it in this afternoon (didn't feel like waiting till the weekend) and then drove it to class to test it out. There is still "some" creaking comming from the main hoop (stress from speed bumps and turning) but I think most of that comes from the fact that I have swing outs (just something I will have to live with).

Welding it cut about 50% of the speed bump noise out and 95% of the "just driving" noise out so I'm really happy.

I have SLP bolt on subframes. Would I gain anything by welding them also? I could jack the car up tomorrow and weld them if it would do anything.

Thanks again,

Chris

OMG!!!!!!!! I welded the subframes this afternoon when I got home from school and WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welding the roll bar got rid of say....95% of the noise I was getting.....welding the subframes got rid of 95% of what was left

The car is firm, quiet, stiffer, and just all around better. I'm still glad everything is bolted (it alighned the parts before welding) but I have changed my entire view...THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE TO WELDED PARTS!!!

To all who helped me out or told me in the past to weld things ......thanks.......I wish I had found this out earlier.

Thanks guys

I love them. They can be a little harsh on bad roads (pot holes, crack, dips, etc.....) so I try to avoid those roads. When I get out and push the car, the car just flys through turns without any problems. The more you push, the more the car seems to handle.

At night, when there are no cars out on the roads, I can hit the left turn green arows at between 45 to 50 mph without even feeling I'm pushing the car (I slide all the way to the right in the seat and am slamed against the console.....its so fun ). I actually burned up my front tires in about a month (only 6 months old) because of how hard I was pushing the car. Your going to love them.
