Default Can someone help me out with my rotor swap?

I'm in the middle of swapping all 4 rotors, adding new pads, painting calipers etc... So far everything is going well, I've got the fronts off, got the calipers painted and the decals on, but for some reason I can't get the rear rotors off.

When I removed the front rotors, there was a small copper object around one of the five bolts. I assume it was there to keep the rotor from sliding off. I pried at it with a screw driver and eventually bent it enough where I could pull the rotor off.

The rear rotors have this same thing, except instead of one, there are three. On the rear rotor I'm trying to get off now, I've got all 3 little copper circles (around the bolts) away from the rotor, but for some reason the rotor will not slide off. I have the emergency brake off, so I know thats not the problem, anyone have any suggestions or ideas on how to get the rotor off or at least how to get the little copper circles off? I wish I had a digicam handy so I could take a pic and show everyone what I was talking about.

Anyways, TIA

The copper clips you're talking about are used at the factory for assembly purposes.

You'll find the rear rotors can be little harder to remove because of a tight fit around the end of the axle, sometimes just a little rust can make it a PITA to remove. You can spray some PB Blaster or W-40 where the rotor and axle end meet, let it set for a few minutes and tap it on the back of the rotor with a rubber malet.

Where in Michigan do you live?

I'm originally from Bloomfield Hills, but I'm a sophmore at the University of Michigan, what about you?? Also, thanks for the help, quite a few bangs from a rubber mallet got the trick done!

I thought if you lived near DeWitt I could give you a hand, Ann Arbor is a little too far but if you get in a jam let me know.

Don't forget to spray the rotors with brake cleaner befor you install the calipers/pads ( I'm sure you already knew that ).

I'm 30 mins down '94 in Dearborn. I'm always here to lend a hand if you need it. As for the PITA rear rotors, I've changed mine 4 times now. My left rear is a son-of-a-bitch. Not sure why. The very first time I remove it I literally pulled with all of my might. I'm 6'7 250lbs so I can pull with the best of them. That sucker broke loose and I went flying back about 10 feet, did a reverse somersault, and landed on my ***! I wish that was on tape. I also rammed the rotor in to my shin <in Homer's voice...Doh!>. Now I use a pry bar and it pops off like nothing.

It's caused by rust build up.

Once it's off, take a piece of emory cloth, scotch brite or other fine grit sand paper and clean up the hub surface.

Next time it won't be so bad ...

BTW ... I use a rubber mallet to break them loose ...
