Default Hows this tire?

Im looking for a cheap, decent tire to get me down the road, but I want a decent speed rating too. How about this:

Kumho ECSTA Supra 712 - Size 245/50WR16 - $83

Heres the TireRack.com link to them.

Any opinions or reccomendations?

Thanks!

------------------------------------------------

The Kumho ECSTA (x' ta) Supra 712 is the newest member of Kumho's "summer" performance tire family. Developed to meet the demands of drivers who require ultra high performance handling and traction, the ECSTA Supra 712 offers a unique combination by blending value-oriented pricing with European design and styling.

On the outside, the ECSTA Supra 712 molds Kumho's advanced silica tread rubber compound into a wide directional tread pattern to provide dry traction and handling. Its angular tread blocks are separated by high angle lateral grooves and a large circumferential center groove to resist hydroplaning and enhance wet traction by evacuating water from between the tire's contact patch and the road (earning the highest "AA" UTQG Traction Rating). Internally, the ECSTA Supra 712's twin steel belts are reinforced with two nylon cap plies to provide high speed durability while delivering responsive handling and stable cornering. Finally, a new casing profile reinforced with a polyester cord body enhances ride comfort.

Kumho ECSTA Supra 712 tires feature black letter styling and are available in 55-, 50-, 45-, 40- and 35-series; H-, V- and Z-speed rated sizes for 14" to 18" wheel diameters.

I am on my second set of these tires and they are great. They work well when its wet and have a great tread life. Heat them up and they grip very well. For the price you CANNOT beat these tires. I have thought about upgrading to the new Kuhmo street tire, I forget the name though. Bottom line great tire for what you are wanting. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

I have them as well. Pretty good tire for the money. They've seen rain, sun, and snow. They've propelled me to a 12.2 @117mph in the 1/4 mile on a 2.0 60' too.

An even cheaper H-Rated version would be the 711. Theyre under $60/tire.

I have them on my car. Overall, I'm pretty happy with them. They are great in the rain, decent in the dry; however, in the snow ... don't even think about it.

There's no tire that's going to be good in that weather. I was able to get from point A to point B with the Kumho's. That's all you can ask from a rear wheel drive vehicle with 300+ rwhp.

I have heard terrible things about this specific tire in the size you are looking at. My friend has a 98 Z28 and he has the Kumho 712's and he can't hook up to save his life. I know it is cheap, but don't forget your tires are the most important part of your car because they are the only part of the car that is touching the ground. Don't get a tire because it is cheap, get a tire because it has great all around capability.

Dude, I have a very difficult time believing that statement considering the problems I had this one time driving home in a snow storm. It just started snowing, there was maybe < 2 inch on the ground. The car was in my mechanics shop, I literally could not get out of his parking lot which was on a very small incline. He had to take out his ATV and pull me out. Going home was down right treacherous… 100X worse than the RSAs that were originally on the car. This was on 2 week old Kumho 712s. Maybe you had 200 pounds in your trunk and tire chains, I just don't know. These Kumhos are not all season tires and IMHO are down right dangerous in the snow.

Nope. No tire chains. No weight in the car at all. I'm not saying they are all season tires. I'm saying that it's possible to manuver in the snow. I live in Michigan. We get tons of snow each year. I have zero problems getting around. My car is an A4 which helps. The traction control helps quite a bit too. I'm not saying that I'm able to do 60mph through snow. I am able to get from point A to point B relatively safely.

I had the ECSTA 712's for 30,000 miles on my WS6, when new these were very good tires, but when the tread got below half life the traction pretty much went out the window. I recently upgraded to the ECSTA MX's, which set me back $825. That price includes mounting, balancing, valves and a $22 per tire treadlife warranty. These tires are a night and day difference from the 712's. Feedback at the limit of cornering is much better than the 712's and they are ALOT quieter rolling down the road.

All I can say is if you can afford the MX's, get them, you will not be disappointed.
