Default Bleeding the brakes...

When should this be done? When changing rotors and pads? Or the whole system? I am about to get ne pads and rotors, and wondering if I should do this.

If you ever plan on pushing them, you might want to upgrade the fluid to the synthetics. You will have to bleed them when you do your pads anyway, so might as well do it then.

Just get a set of solo bleeders and put those in while you are under there. You can't beat the $24 they will cost you after shipping, as far as the convenience factor goes.

You can spend all kind of $ on fluid but I'd say just get some Valvoline SynPower. Its pretty cheap and you can pick it up almost anywhere.

Bleed them though its worth it.

If you are just changing the rotors and pads then you don't have to bleed the system. You only need to bleed the system if its been opened (bleeder opened/caliper removed/etc) or the fluid was damaged (boiled/burnt/age/etc) or if air got into the system and compromised braking ability. That being said, the fluid should be changed every two years. More often if racing (yearly/seasonal/performance/preference). When the fluid is changed a bleed is neccessary. If you decide to change the fluid, an upgrade to DOT4 would be a good idea (the 4th-gen f-body came with DOT3). Check out the whitepapers in the sticky for more info on brake fluid.

Here are the whitepapers:

Ok, when I upgrade I will bleed and add better fluid, should I get better lines too? I'm not exactly sure how to and I dont want to do it wrong, is there somewhere I can read on how to bleed them correctly. Thanks guys.

You can read the instructions at http://www.installuniversity.com/ins...sity/index.htm

If you get better lines I'd go with Goodridge. They cost a little more but are a much better line. They can be found on tirerack and at other places.

The jury is out on whether or not the braided lines actually provide an improvement on the 4th-gen f-body. Supposedly there is a braid in the stock brake lines. Can someone who has swapped lines, cut an old stock one to show us? There are people on both sides of the argument saying that it helps or that it does nothing. Those that say they saw a huge improvement also changed out 4yr-old stock fluid with new DOT4 fluid so its actually the fluid that made the improvement.

There are plenty of threads on here about bleeding the brakes:

well I bought this kit. It's a suction which syphons out the brake fluid. The best I can describe it kind of has a staple gun trigger, meaning you have to squeeze it and it has a pressure gauge on the device along with a little bottle resevoir which is where the old crap fluid goes into. Basically it's a syphoning device, I got this from my dad so I really don't know where to get them but it's the next best thing to an actual brakefluid machine.

Maybe brakefluid syphoning kit IDK, I'll try to see if I can dig it up for you. But that's what I use to change the fluid.

It really depends on how often you drive the car, as a DD you will have to change it more frequently than a weekend toy. I change mine twice a year and it's my toy, but I'm paranoid and crazy for doing this I sure you lol! I shouldn't tell ya how often I change the oil lol.

I am with "WADDISME" synthetics are the way to go.

DOT 5 fluids are not compatible with our brake system.

DOT 5.1 is good, but not DOT 5

I think that is what Boss is talking about. Or at least something like it. Seems like a pretty cool little tool that's easy to use.

I have that, but those little 5 dollar one man bleeders you can buy an any auto parts store or Sears work just as well. I bleed my brakes alot and found myself just using that since it's so simple. It even comes with an adapter to bleed two screws at once since my Baer calipers have two screws each. It looks like this one:

I prefer pulling fluid from the caliper as opposed to pushing fluid through the MC.

Too easy to introduce air if the power bleeder runs out of fluid and still has pressure.

While this particular one might not overpressurize, I have seen platic master cylinders crack at the seams when using pneuamatic type power bleeders.

Make a helluva mess.
