Default Dragging brake

Last weekend I replaced the front brakes on my 98 T/A. I've had this car long enough that I've done both front and rear brakes before, so nothing new for me.

However, this time I think I have a dragging front-passenger caliper. When driving I get a shimmy at 55mph and while braking at speed I get a speed-dependent wub wub sound that sometimes sounds like clunking. When I got to work this morning I found that side to be very hot, even the wheel was hot to the touch.

Car is bone stock. I used OEM pads, springs, and even the replacement slider bolts. The rotors were cut for the first time and didn't appear to be warped before removal, yet the monkey at Pep Boys claims that they were warped. I also bled the brakes after reassembly and topped off fluid.

Any things I should check?

sounds like the caliper piston is worn out or stuck, when you pushed the piston back did it go back easy or did you have to crack the bleeder? sometimes after you push the piston back and it comes back out for the first time it just sticks and get stuck. you can either spend the money and wasted time and rebuild it, or IMO just spend the money and replace them along with a fresh coat of paint before install for better apperance.

Check for stuck slider pins.

As procedure I open the bleeder with a host to a catch can, so that when I push the pistons in, it pushes out the old junk rather than back up into the lines, where it can do harm. I do a bleed after reassembly to ensure this process didn't push air into the system. No considerable effort was needed to push in the piston. I just used a C-clamp on each piston.

I guess I'm not sure why a piston that is stuck in would cause the brakes to drag. I'll have to check it out as soon as possible.

If the sliders stick, the caliper won't float and can drag. Do a quick search for slider pins or stuck slider pins here, you'll find plenty of info.

Was it hard to get the caliper back over the rotor?

Yup, it was a seized slider. I don't recall having this problem before the brake job. I'm not sure what I did to cause this.

I'll be heading to the dealer soon to replace the caliper bracket and slider pins. Thanks guys.

If the brakes get hot (and they do) or water gets in the boot and they don't get lubed regularly, they can sieze to the bracket. It's a common problem with these cars and explains about 75% of the posts like yours (and we see a bunch of them). It's the first thing to check (once you know to check it). Glad you got it figured out.

I had a siezed slider. Replace the boots while you have it apart, cheap insurance.

He said he used replacement slider bolts (that hold the caliper on), but not the pins.
