Default Flushing the brake fluid

I am in need of flushing the brake fluid on the Firehawk and I was wandering how everyone goes about doing this. I feel kinda dumb asking this, but I would assume that you just open one of the bleeder valves and pump the brakes until you almost run out of fluid and then put the new fluid in.

Also, what kind of brake fluid do I need to use?

Thanks

you're kind of right... you need a friend to help, one person to pump the brake, the other to watch the line being pumped and to fill the resevior

(assuming you have the car jacked up already and the wheels off, make sure you properly secure the car on stands and not on the jack itself)

1st.. you take of the brake resevior cap..

2nd.. you start at the farthest caliper away from the master.. which is the rear passenger side

3rd.. crack the bleeder valve open, attach a clear rubber hose line (about 12"-20") over the nipple that will empty into a bucket or container.

4th.. pump the brakes(all the way down, let the peddle come all the way up) and just before the resevior goes down all the way, fill it with new fluid (i recomend Super Blue ATE, this also lets you see when the new fluid is coming out the caliper)

5th.. when you start to see the new fluid coming out, make sure there are no air bubbles in the line.. give 2-3 more pumps, on the last pump hold it all the way to the floor.. have the friend then tighten the bleeder screw.. release the peddle once tight..

6th.. check the level of the resevior(you should always be checking this as you are doing this bleeding) fill to the top.. repeat for rear diver, then front passenger.. and finally front driver.

NEVER let the resevior go dry.. you will get major air bubbles in the system

I do a complete bleeding of my brakes every time before I race (road racing) which is about 2 times a month (from april to oct.) Never had a problem with this method.

If you can not find Super Blue ATE, you can also use the Castrol Syntec DOT 3 fluid (on the bottle it states meets and exceeds 3 and 4) if you use a clear fluid.. when you are bleeding, pay closer attention to the color that is coming out of the bleeder.. the blue you can make no mistake.

hope this helps

Thanks for the great writeup. Honestly, I never knew exactly how to do it, but your directions are about what I guessed.

NO! IF the line is submerged in fluid, then OK. But if it is just hanging with fluid dripping and you release the brake peddle, you risk drawing air back into the caliper.

The method is ...

1. bleeder valve closed

2. pump brake pedal a couple times and press, holding pressure on the peddle.

3. bleeder valve open - fluid should come out and the peddle will go to the floor.

4. peddle on the floor - continue to hold pressure

5. close bleeder valve

6. go to 2 and repeat

release peddle

The above is the correct way IMO. You can also get a brake bleeder that works great.

I have bled my brakes by myself for years (30+). I have a bleeder that I got from an autoparts store that lets me bleed it myself. It is only 10 or so, and always gets all the air out. Just remember the correct sequence, RR. LR, RF, LF. If you let the mc run out of fluid (danger, danger), you have to start all over.
