Brake Bleed Question?

Brake Bleed Question? I am going to replace my brakes and rotors this weekend for my first time. I read the how to and it does not seem that hard to me. The only question I have is do you have to use a c-clamp and wood to bleed the brakes??? or can I just install the brakes and rotors on the car and pump the brake pedal to bleed the brakes with no tires on??? Thanks for any help, I have never even changed brake pads before.

Just the rotors and pads. I thinking I could open the bleed valve and bleed the system by pushing the brake pedal, after I have installed the rotors and brake pads.
Changing pads and rotors is one thing. You use a c-clamp to drive the pistons back into the calipers so there is enough room for the new pads to be installed. By doing so, some fluid will return to the resevoir. But there is no pedal pumping involved.
Bleeding break is a different process. You can do this at a different time from changing pads and with tires either on or off (but might be easier with tires off.) You pump the pedal, hold it, and open the bleeder screw to let some break fluid and air out. Close the screw and release the pedal. Repeat until there is no more air coming out.

So you do not have to bleed the system when you install new rotors and pads?? Like is said before I am new at this and this weekend will be my first attempt. Thanks for the info.
No, bleeding the system is not necessary when installing rotors and pads. But, you do have to push the piston back into the caliper like was stated above in order to make room for the new, thicker brake pads. When you do that, you will lose pressure in the system. After you have everything installed, start the car and pump the brakes many times until the pedal gets firm again. You'll probably have to pump them 10-15 times. Make sure you do this and don't just hop in your car and start driving because your brakes won't work right away if you do! Once the pedal is firm again, you're ready to go. I usually do a couple of test stops at different speeds to make sure everything is working properly.
