because if you drop the motor, you have a lot more stuff to disconnect. Fuel lines, grounds, wire harness, the tranny comes with it, disconnect the driveshaft, remove the shifter, taking off the torque arm.

if you have a STB, you can let the engine "hang" off of it with a chain while you unmount it and drop the old k member.

I wouldnt trust a STB to hold up my motor while I was under it changing out a K-member.

Why not? You're talking about a 1.5" peice of steel or aluminum holding up 250 lbs. Also, with the trans still connected to the trans brace, it's not holding all of the weight.

When I eventually get a k-member, I'll put the car on my bro-in-laws lift, throw a trans jack under the trans and swap out the k-member. I will put a pair of supports from each head up to the shock tower brace to keep the motor from rocking, but I wouldn't be worried about it falling.

If somebody pulls the motor just to do a K-member swap, then they are definitely a masochist.

Bolt on a strut tower brace and use a tie down strap.

Been there and done that and it works great.

Agreed, get the proper engine holding tool, its bigger, beefier, boxed tubing that connect to the strut towers, it is designed for this specific application

I used a wood 4x4 to support the engine.

or this method

When it all comes down to it, its about how safe the person thats working on the car feels. If your fine with a STB go right ahead. Keep in mind a fully dressed LS1 weights 458lbs

I used a cherry picker to hold the LT1 in place and droped the k member out the bottom. Worked great for me, actualy I rented the cherry picker from a local shop and he wanted to sell it so I picked it up on a cheep price.

Your betting your life, hoping the hydrallic fluid pressure will hold, just like having a car resting on a set of hyd jack's instead of stands, eventually its going to give out
