Default SLP SFC's (weld-on)

I have these sitting in my closet at home. I have the weld-on ones that are to be painted after they're installed. my question is how do i prep them in order to paint them???
im guessing i clean them and sand them down before installation so its easier. after that get them installed and primer, then paint.
i can use some help with this!!! also not sure if i am to put some clear coat on.???
thanks for any help

I wiped mine down with prepsol (body shop pre cleaner), but, I'd just hit them with brake cleaner and wipe them off. Paint them with spray in truck bedliner material (go to advance auto parts or your local chain store). Then weld them in (paint first) and paint over the welds.

Good luck!

Coat them with POR15, Cannibal turned me on to this stuff, I haven't used it YET. It looks bulletproof. And pretty inexpensive.

powder coat and then weld them in.....it will only burn off right where the weld is so that can be painted over......much stronger

But the instructions say to have the SFC clean of any rust, paint and any dirt. maybe i misunderstanding this, or do you mean paint whats not going to be welded then paint that part after its welded on???

thanks

This is very accurate as far as the powdercoat is concerned.
There is a very small area where the powdercoat is effected by the welding process.

Welding stronger? no and certainly not much stronger.
How will you protect the back side of the the base metal that will also be effected?
It's one thing to paint the weld but there's more to it than that.

POR 15 has their metal prep that coats the part in phosphate
powder coaters will do the same thing.

I would not coat where you know your going to weld and then come back after to coat the weld and back side of the base metal your welding to.

thats what i was thinking of doing. just paint whats not going to be welded then go back and finish the paint!!!
thanks

IMO the best thing you can do is : Use weld through primer on the area you will weld(front and back) and then coat everything with POR 15.Weld them in, allow welds to cool, and paint welded area with POR 15.

I have to give a vote for the POR 15 that stuff is excellent.
I used it on the differential that came to me rust from the factory.

You can buy weld through primer at most industrial welding supply stores and online. There are a bunch of brands out there Sprayon,Wurth,3M,Bloxide,MAR-HYDE and others make this stuff. You can buy Bloxide from Eastwood.

http://www.eastwoodcompany.com

I have used 3M Weld Thru and Bloxide and have had good results with both. Also,it kinda sucks to weld through this stuff so be warned.

3m's Weld Thru Coating part number is :051131-05913
