Default Cutting Springs?

What's the deal with cutting your stock springs to lower the car? I don't know much about suspension, but I do want my car lowered. I don't drive around real fast or corner hard, but this still doesn't sound too safe. Any input? Thanks a lot.

just spend the 200-300 dollars and do it right and then you dont have to worry about anything.

2-300 isnt near doing it right. springs, shocks, adj phb, lca's and brackets, yeah.. adds up quick.

don't cut too much off and you'll be fine. never cut the fronts before but if you cut a coil and a half or so off the rear it lowers it quite nicely.

all you really need is an eibach pro kit - i got my springs for 85 dollars and the car is ******* dumped. rides like a shopping cart but **** it it looks good.

never had a complaint with either of my other camaros lowered on stock springs just cut

You do not need LCA's or relocation brackets.

why does everyone assume that to lower a car you have to get koni's, lca's, molly panhard bar and everything else strano sells (nothing against strano or those who want the best setup). its like giving my grandmother a hemi in her 300 when she doesnt do over 40 on the highway. not everyone wants a car that can tear up the street and track.

The same reason that you need supporting mods for a cam or N20. Sure, you can try and get away without them, but the car wont run correctly. Without good shocks the car will ride/feel like a lowered truck, and you may be hurting handling(lack of control). Many wont even want to drive their own car anymore.
An adjustable PHB centers the rear end after you lower (the rear end will be moved to the left).
The other things you mentioned you do not need.

ok so take off lca's and brackets.. you are still looking at alot of money to do it correctly. 300 for springs, 600 for shocks (the cheap ones for a lowered car) and 150 for an adj phb. that's a grand. now you turn well but have worse traction than before, and more than likely have terrible wheel hop, and a much stiffer ride. not to mention you scrape on every driveway in town. no thanks

I guess you've never been in a properly lowered car? My car rides better than stock, is no different traction getting off the line (accept WAY better feel and control launching), no wheel hop, and no difference in scraping/bottoming out vs stock. The ride is more firm, I definitly wouldn't call it "stiff", stock is actually more jarring than this. It rides more like a Z06, or CTS-V, and compared to this stock feels like an old truck.

I cut almost a coil off the front and rear springs. It lowered the car about 3/4". Looks a lot better and still rides as good as stock. I recomend it if you want to lower the car less then an inch and aren't interested in your car ridding like a "shopping cart"

i guess we have different opinions. i just prefer a car with good shocks and stock springs. and yes i have been in a "properly lowered car". i also owned an old truck (1980 f150) so there's no way u can compare the two.

If you're just looking for that lowered look or just to remove that gap between the tires and the fenderwells, a set of lowering springs will do nicely, and will work w/ the oem shocks/struts. You're done!

You can just install springs. It will work... In the same way an LS1 intake works with a huge cam...

Why didn't you just remove the rear isolators? Would have given you the same drop in the rear. glad it worked out for you though.

I wouldn't cut springs myself...not on a modern car.....on a 60's or 70's car I might. Never did though.

The Isolators are the rubber mounts above the rear springs. People remove them and put some hose over the spring to prevent metal on metal contact. They give you a 3/4" drop... would have been a better solution IMO

What kind of rubber do you put on the spring? Water hose? Hose from kragen? Autozone? Will you need the phb if you do this?
