Default Tunnel Brace

Can someone please explain to mean what a tunnel brace is and what it's purpose is ?
I just installed my SLP y pipe this afternoon and I couldn't get the tunnel brace (I think that is the right name) back on due to the new y-pipe is too large. It's the piece that bolts/screws into the belly of the car & is real close to where the y-pipe and intermediate pipe connect together th
I will either need to heat up and hammer out the old piece or use some longer screws and flat washers to get the brace back on the car.
Any comments ?

Remove it. It's a useless mystery piece...something like tonsils for a car. I've removed it on all three of my F-bodys. You'll never know it's gone.

Yeah, remove it. Colonel, have you gone past bolt-ons on your new Z? Any weight reduction on it?

Once you take it off look at it and see how flimsy it is. It MUST have some purpose, but I've never seen anybody come up with a good reason to keep it...

Yep, when I added bigger Y-pipe and Flowmaster Collector, mine did not fit either.
It is laying around the garage somewhere.

It was supposed to help eliminate flex from the floorpan area. GM was trying to correct their earlier chassis design "sins", but I'm not sure how terribly effective it is. If you are running something like SLP subframe connectors, it will tie them tohether and may prove slightly useful, but I can't say how useful. I have the SLP subs and a lakewood driveshaft loop and can't tell any difference from the loop to that stock stamped bracket....

Have fun!

SFCs make that piece look nice and dainty. GM meant well with that one but...

WS6, nah, the '02 is still internally stock with the only weight reduction being spare, jack, tunnel brace, and a C/F driveshaft. The stereo system, wheels, and tires make up for that though.

I had the same problem. With SFC's, I thought it was a good idea to tie them together. I mean, the tunnel must have some flex in it. A large stamped piece like that will flex with a huge radius in the middle of it, LOL. I made a spacer (1/4 inch) and used an aftermarket tunnel brace. I think I can tell the difference...JMO

I got a BMR at Thunder Racing (see link to right). It is tube, not stamped - $90. The only concern is that the brace, which runs underneath the pipe is probably going to be the lowest point on your car. If you have lowered your car, this might be an issue. Personally, I dont mind it. I like a $90 pice being the lowest point on my car. I have only hit it once on a very tall speed bump because I wasn't thinking about it.

I agree. I tied my Boxed SFCs together with a BMR tunnel brace also. I swear it makes a difference. Anyone who hasn't got their SFCs yet, you should consider this combination. And yes, the tunnel brace is now the lowest point under my car but it is also protecting the bottom of my car.

How expensive, how hard to install and what will I actually gain from installing SFC's ? TIA.

Just an FYI...Thunder Racing is having a sale, you might want to check it out if your shopping for SFC's or tunnel brace.

SFCs will strengthen your chassis and provide better cornering. How hard to install? If you get bolt-ons you can install them in your driveway. If you get the weld-in kind, you'll need to get them (hopefully) professionally installed. Prices? Check Here for a couple of examples.
