Default What does a tunnel brace do?

My Z28 is missing the tunnel brace. Seems to drive ok. No junkyards around here have one right now so I've been driving without it.
What exactly does it do?
It looks so thin it can't do much, I may have to make one, I have some 1/4 x 2" steel and 1x1 tubing. []______[] ?

Get a driveshaft safety loop. It goes in place of the tunnel brace and provides support too. I suggest the BMR or UMI one.

I dunno. I bought this to use as a stock sort of beater. I guess I could put the good one on my SS and put the stock one on the Z28. Don't really have to money right now though.

Oh?
Maybe I can do it sooner, but not now.
Does the tunnel brace really do much?

If you can't find an OE part, Granatelli makes, or did make, a tubular one that was supposed to be a lot stronger. OK, I fell for the "stronger" hype and bought one. One problem, and one observation...The problem? It's bulkier that the OE part and hangs down further, reducing ground clearance. The observation? It attaches to a couple of rather flimsy formed sheet metal brackets that are welded to the floor pan. I'm sure that the brackets will fold up long before any serious torsional force is applied to the floorpan. Therefore, why brace it?

Bottom line...After scraping a couple of speed bumps with it, it now graces the shelf in my basement. Also, since the Kenny Brown subframe connectors I put in the car attach there, I had to remove it.

My thoughts exactly.

Well it does a good job of dragging on speedbumps! You wont notice anything with or without one. I guess they do look kinda pretty though. But like the others said, the best way to make it functional is to just get it with the DSL.

It helps keep the tunnel from spreading when loaded laterally. It doesn't work in bending (you could probably bend it with your hands) it works in stretching (try pulling it apart, you can't do it). It's a similar concept to the tunnel brace on the vettes, just a lot smaller.
Lots of people have ran without it, lots of people say it's a useless piece of tin, make your own judgment.
