just wondering because if the buyer doesnt go to reregister it in their name it would still be in mine. so for example if they run through a eztag lane the fines would come to me.

Take the tags off. I had that problem long ago. Kept getting toll violations on a vehicle i had sold over a year before. Don't know how they were able to even drive it around with bad tags but I had to jump through hoops to prove the truck wasn't in my possession so they would drop the charges. Never again will I chance that ****

If you don't take the plates/tag off the car you can also download form VTR-346 and fill it in and send to Austin within 30 days and you will not be liable for the plates anymore.

More info here. http://www.txdmv.gov/vehicles/titles/faq.htm

What he said. NO need to take the tag or plates off. Print out a buyers/sellers form from DPS website and keep a copy for your self. If you date the title they have 30 days to transfer it. After 30 days they charge a $25.00 late fee every month after.

i remove the plates, registration sticker, and fill out the before mentioned form and send it in to remove liability of the actions of the new owner... i think there is a $5 fee or something like that but no biggie... if the buyer has any problems with you doing any of that then i would not sell it to them anyway

Remove the plates and sticker, problem solved. I have done that a few times. They have to register the vehicle and you are no longer tied to it.

Even if you take the plates and sticker they can go get new ones in your name. All they have to say is one of the plates got stolen and I need a new tag because the windsheild was replaced. Sold our WS6 over 2yrs ago to a friend and he has gone to the tax office every year to renew the tags. he just takes the title with him. So that plan does not CYA. Fill out the forms and call it a day.

seriously?... that is shitty and ridiculous at the same time... you figure the person showing the title would also have to show their id and the info match... just goes to show all they really care about is money

There are several forms that can be filled out. And if BOTH parties sign on the line YOU are covered if he kills a man or runs a toll. Had that problem when I sold my bike. The tickets I got in the mail where dismissed for me and sent to him. Just protect yourself amd have them sign anything and everything possible saying your not the owner anymore then take it to the tax office

I guess it depends on who you get and what you tell them. I went and got tags on the cobra before I transfered the title. The T/A is still registered to Kristin right now

The last car I bought from an individual, we met at the DMV. I handed him the cash, he gave me the docs I needed and I went in and changed it all. He went in with me and wouldn't give me the keys until I had transferred it all. It seemed a bit of a hassle at the time, but it makes sense.

Get a bill of sale, check their license to make sure you got their right info. Sign and date the title, if you do that they only have I think 90 days to get it put in their name or they will have to pay a fee for going over the 90 days.

It's 30 days NOT 90 days and you need to date the title to.
