How much machine work did you have to put into the block?

My other car has a dry sleeved stock alum block. Was Not impressed on my last refresh.

I am currently in the planning stages of replacing that block with another lsx or maybe a dart??

But also considering a stock ls7 shortblock. Just because my last one made it to over 100k miles before any issues. And would be cool to convert the car over to the dry sump setup.

It came to right around a grand which included:

line hone
decking
bore and hone to 4.100" (this was $400 due to the extra material removed)
file fitting rings
rebushing rods and fitting them to the pistons
polishing crank

So an ERL 6 bolt superdeck, which is already machined, is pretty close to the cost of a machined LSX block. The ERL is $3650 (figure another hundo for shipping). I paid $2500 shipped for the block and another grand for machining; a little of which would have to have been done on either block (crank polishing, rod rebushing, file fit rings). So only a few hundred difference. But the core for the ERL is another $1300. I'm cheap so to save the weight of the iron block wasn't worth $1300 for me.

I thought you could use any aluminum block minus the first gen LS1?

I don't think so. On their site they list the LS2 core as $1300 and LS3 core as $1450.

Yup. But net net there was only an additional ~$150 or so for the extra boring over them machining any block.
