Why does it have to be complete? You can buy things separately too. Maybe just concentrate on getting the parts you need, instead of worrying about it all being grouped together?

I have a brand new GM crate engine, 404 hp all-aluminum 6.2L LS3/L92 I'd sell. $5,000 complete from intake to oil pan and fuel rails, coils, etc..

No tranny, no belt driven accessories.

Carry swaps? Anyone doing a swap most of the time pieces it together. I know you'd like to avoid doing the work yourself, but IF someone has a full swap and decides to sell it off, don't expect the best deal on it.

Best bet is check threads about people wrecking/totalling their cars. A guy just wrecked his z28 with 40k miles on the motor and it's only $2700 to buy the whole car back from the insurance, but I think it was an auto.

i really don't see what the big difference is between a 01-02 ls1 and a 99 other than maybe the intake. i know there are small differences, but really not a big decision making factor

I didnt think so either. The PCV valley cover is different I think, other than that I dont know what you'd want.

You should consider miles and condition, not the year IMO
