Default 04-up 5.4 F150:Things to look for?

We are picking one up hopefully for my gf after her F150 got totalled hitting my Z28. Just wondering what are some things to look for?

Problems w/one we found:

1.) There is a vibration when idling that feels almost like a mount of some sort is bad but its fine when driving.

2.) Also, the trans shifts totally different from GM vehicles, but I think it might be normal.

3.) There are mismatched tires on the front which leads me to believe the one may be out of balance which is accounting for a bit of vibration when driving.

4.) Plastic bedside cover things look like they have wax on them

The one we are prolly buying is a 04, 44k miles, Black, XLT, w/tan interior from Waco. Drove it tonight and it drove perfect from what I could tell. The exterior is the best of any truck I have seen...0, literally, scratches and dents. Apparently it was a lease vehicle.

Thanks!

If it's one that came equiped with a blue oval on the grill, then you probably shouldn't buy it.

post up the vin and i will run a carfax for you. sounds fishy having new paint and mis matched tires, might have been in a wreck or two

i would personally go with the 4.6 motor to get better gas mileage. not like your girlfriend is going to do any towing just smashin into your next car lol

I just bought a 2005 Fx4 supercab with 40k miles on it last month from Dallas. Aside from the common things to look for when purchasing a vehicle, problem areas that I was told to look for in the 04+ trucks were rear end differential leaks and the idle positioning sensors seem to frequently go out.

Sometimes I wish that I would have bought another Diesel truck despite fuel prices. My 5.4 liter gets about 15mpg no mater how I drive the truck, I miss my 7.3 liter diesel that got 21mpg on the freeway! Anyhow, they are great trucks, I dont think you can go wrong with the quality or the price. These trucks are a dime a dozen, you should be able to pick up something for cheap!

Best of Luck

Joe

my buddy's 04 has a vibration at idle too, kinda feels like the engine and trans are on poly or very solid motor mounts... also the swaybar setup on those trucks kinda sucks, hes been through 3 endlinks. They have a tierod end setup that is not greaseable,

The 5.4 spark plug design sux ... they frequently get stuck in the head and break off when trying to change them ... do yourself a favor and call the dealership ahead of your purchase and ask them what it cost to change the plugs on a 5.4 ... they'll likely tell you $300 - $1300 depending on how many break off in the head.

Also many came with non-removable front brake rotors. Anytime you need to have the rotors turned it has to be done on the vehicle and most shops, even dealers, don't have the right equipment to do it. So on those your brake jobs usually cost you a lot more time and money. Take it to a shop and have them check it for you, some have separate hubs and brake rotors.

Ditto on the spark plugs, don't try this at home.

Honestly a Ford truck would be my 5th choice based on what I see every day at work. Almost anyone would do better with a GM or Dodge truck. Japanese are fine but you're not getting enough to justify the higher prices over GM and Dodge.

My brothers truck has a small vibration at idle... its an 05. I personally prefer chevy trucks over ford, I like the way they handle/ride better. But they are great trucks
