Guy we don't know each other but you're asking so here's what I know. I work on them all and Ford is the last diesel truck I would ever consider buying. They break a lot and require mad long days thrashing with special tools and skills to repair. This costs a lot of money. Get a Dodge or GM and you'll be much happier. This is common knowledge to people who deal with them all without prejudice. People who defend Ford diesels either don't have a clue as to how good it can be to own a diesel truck or want to believe they made the best choice because they or Ford are always right. Most of my customers that have owned one for a couple of years or more hate their truck and they don't show up at my shop until they're out of warranty and they already are sick of them. Ask around any garage and you'll hear the same thing.

Good luck,
Vernon

I "own" a 05 F350, its actually a company truck. It has the 6.0L diesel.
At;
11,000 miles the turbo had to be replaced
18,000 miles 3 injectors had to be replaced
34,000 miles 2 more injectors went out
94,000 miles the truck wont start because of low fuel pressure, replaced fuel pump and "lift" pump
Truck currently has 97,xxx miles.
The truck never technically left me stranded, but it did make me late (several days late) on four occasions. Mileage is ok, it has 4.10 gears which suck the fuel, but if I keep it at 65mph I can get around 16-17mpg empty. Too many variables to say what kind of mpg's it gets pulling but I dont think I have ever seen it below 10mpg.
I'll second Vernon's opinion to stay away from the 6.0L. We also have Dodge and GM company trucks, both the cummins and D-max motors have never given us a problem. But, the dodge did blow its auto tranny at 130,xxx miles and no it wasn't chipped. In my opinion, if you have to buy an automatic truck get a GM if you dont mind the manual tranny get the Dodge.

do yourself a favor, and dont buy a new truck, wether it be a dodge, ford, or chevy. they all have restrictive diesel particulate filters, and they all manage about 8-10 mpg in stock form. either get a 5.7l cummings, or a 99-02 f250 with the 7.3l. both motors will do great, with the 7.3l stick to the 99.5-00 as they have forged internals from the factory. i have a 99.5, and got 8.5mpg towing an enclosed 24' trailer doing 80 with a 3600lb car in it . get about 18 when unloaded.

Is there a difference between the f250 and f350 7.3l. Have a 2000 f350 and I'm just wondering?

just a thought. i have already order the stageII AFE cold air intake kit for the truck and was looking at mufflers. the truck has 4"exhaust from the turbo down pipe to the tail pipe with the huge cat. i plan on leaving the cat, but was thinking about just removing the muffler and put straight pipe in its place. i dont want a whole lot of noise just doing this to free up the exhaust. i dont want to be redneck but has anybody done this and who bad was it?
