I lived in the DC area until 89...never made enough to even rent a good apt.

I live in the San Antonio area...growing fast but houses are still selling and muuuuuuuuuuuuuch less than DC.

I bought a small (1,330 sq ft) house in 90 for 34,500 because of the depressed mkt at that time. It orig sold for 59k in 84.

New prices start at about low 100s now in a lot of the areas.

A guy who works here is in real estate and doing ok considering the economy. He sells commercial as well as residential.

We have a good track nearby but lost the IHRA natl event this year.

The cost of living is low, homes are very affordable compared to the rest of the States. Traffic it varies on the city, in Houston it SUCKS, it's proably one of the worst in traffic behind L.A. The food is awesome, and the quality of people varies Some are yuppie stuck up's from trendy neighborhoods, others are very down to earth people regardless of your race. WE DONT RIDE AROUND IN HORSES, regardless of what you heard, well at least not in the cities or suburbs. The weather is super Hot in Summer and midly cold in Winter. The weather sucks the most in HOuston, but it's ok, it's a trade off and evens out with the affordability and entertainment that the city has to offer. Alot of the minorities dont have insurance. There's allot of high Hp cars, so you have to bring your A game if you wanna step up to the plate. Oh and the Women are as hot as our summers

Thanks for the replies everyone.

So there are beautiful women. As nice as that may be, I've got my hottie, so I'm not too concerned about this.

I do understand the summer is super hot. I really dislike winter, so I can certainly adjust. How humid is the DFW area? This is why I've ruled Houston out, because of the humidity and proximity to the gulf.

We don't even need to live in the suburbs. We're fine with moving further out to the country as long as we're able to be close to something. We're also looking for the type of town that shuts down on Friday night for the high school football games.

With it being a red state, it makes it even more appealing. I live in DC, so liberal is the word around here. I would like to avoid Austin because of this (and I already did the college-town thing).

As for fast cars - hopefully with the money I save on housing I will be able to build something nasty!

Just give me some lists of nice areas to check out around DFW, and if anyone has an in at any large dealerships for services writers/managers, that'd be alright, too What do you all do for a living?

See my reply above. I'm done with college towns. I grew up in Happy Valley. Although I love Penn State, I am done living with those kids. It'd be the same in Austin.

Well, my wife and I are both engineers and we live in Weatherford and work in Fort Worth. We are 30 min from downtown Fort Worth. At 7:00 in the morning, we never dip below the speed limit on the daily commute. Minimal traffic. It is the kind of small town (but not too small) that you are looking at. PM me if you want some info on Housing. We moved here from KC 2 years ago and were amazed at what we could find for the $$.

Okay, you pass the test. I'm from Euless, it was voted the best town in the US to raise a kid in last year, I believe Colleyville has the highest median in come of any town in the country. Look at a map of Grapevine Lake and search all the surrounding towns. It's a nice area to live.

Sorry, I suppose I should have mentioned my political opinion I just want people to stay out of my business. I can make my own decisions and it seems like you all are pretty "free" down there.

Well if you move you'll see Texans are protective of Texas Don't want to see it go the way of North Carolina and I'm sure you wouldn't want to end up being taxed like you are in D.C.

let me put it to you like this, 100 in dallas is more tolerable than 85 in boston. my DD doesnt even have working A/C and i've gotten by for the past 3 years without it.

make sure you understand that DFW is NOT like the north east where all the towns and cities are tiny. from the east side of dallas to the west side of fort worth is almost HALF the size of the ENTIRE state of massachusetts, and its only 3 towns away! (fort worth->arlington->grand prairie-> dallas).

i've known people that live in weatherford, and it is seriously out there. just my $0.02 here, but being that you are used to city life, there are plenty of areas within 15-20mi of downtown dallas that are nice quiet suburbs

according to www.city-data.com, DC is 61sq mi. Boston is 43sq mi. Fort Worth is 292, Dallas is 342. look at the stats for population density, and you'll see that just because you live IN the city limits, doesnt mean you are in crowded urban life.

Not sure who told you Dallas doesn't get humid. It does. Pretty much any southern state surrounding the gulf gets humid. I don't mind it really, just something you get used to. If you want hot and dry, move to Arizona, Nevada, or New Mexico, or even west Texas.

Austin is a huge city, not a "college town". If you move far enough from the campus (center of the city) you will not be living with the college kids. The country around Austin is THE best in the state, rolling hills and tall trees. Plenty of smaller towns and suburbs outside of Austin. NW Houston area is the same way. Towns like Magnolia, Tomball, The Woodlands, Conroe, are very nice scenery-wise and are still small-town in nature. That is where I live now.

I've been all over TX, and would only consider Houston or Austin for myself.

Just because I'm used to it here doesn't mean I like it. I really dislike it, actually, and this is why I'd like to move away from it. I grew up in the middle of PA. It wasn't near anything. We had the university and that was it.

It wasn't that I heard it wasn't humid in Dallas, it was that Huston is the worst. This is why I wanted to stay more north.

I suppose what I need to do is bring my Fiance down there so we can check it all out. Who wants to be our tour guide? Tony, would you mind letting us use your cars as rentals?

I'll just give you the number to the place that I rent all my cars from. What, did you think I bought all these piles of junk?
