I shoot a browning A bolt .270 with a Leupold scope, yet to fail me and I have a beautiful head shot with it.
Everything mentioned here would do the trick though.
Speaking of deer... anyone know a decent lease (price wise) in north to north east Texas?

30-06 with a 180 grain will kill anything in North America and I stand by that. Get a remington synthetic and you will be quite happy. Thats my gun of choice, but if you want something with some kick go for a 340 or 375. Good luck.
Oh you better buy it soon cause the messiah may make some problems in the future.

I have been hunting my whole life and when I was younger I shot a .243 and 3 years ago I bought a .270 with a Nikon Scope for a little bit more knock down power. I have had yet to have a deer/turkey/varment run from me. I have shot turkeys at 100+ yards and if anyone knows a turkey is hard to hit with a rifle when trying not to ruin the meat. I would say a .270 is the all around Texas hunting rifle. My dad shoots a 30-06 and it is also a great rifle for Texas just sometimes ruins the meat.

A 7mm mag. is good even for elk and large game. There is nothing wrong with using it for white tale either. 30-06 is what I use now and it is perfect for white tale. I used to use a 30-30 and there is nothing wrong with that either. I killed several bucks with it. When I was young I used a 243 with a balistic tip bullet that just didn't leave a blood trail. Probably due to the balistic tip, but still a bit on the small side. I don't like for the animal to suffer. I want as near of an istant death as I can manage. My mom uses a .270 and my dad just bought a Weatherby and I think it is a .270 or .280 mag. All good guns. Oh we reload our bullets also.

I just got back from academy i purchased the Mossberg ATR 100 in the camo finish.
BTW I pay $300 for a 5 day hunt just north of Kerrville TX, your allowed 2 does and 1 spike.
And there was more deer there than i could count...

Hope you got a .270 or 30.06. The price per box is by far better than the rest of the guns mentioned here that have the same power. I really wouldnt recommend a .243 for you since you just started hunting. There are way too many deers that go and die elsewhere wounded. And the 30-30 you were talking about, is a bad *****!! I've killed with that one and the exit wound is crazy!! I personally hunt with a .270 and absolutely love it. You cant beat that flat trajectory for the price of ammo.

30-06 710 Remington, 30-06 700 Remington, .270 700 Remington on my gun rack. Both calibers will do well on everything up to moose. Just have to have the right load and bullet. 7 mag is a bit much for deer size game. I saw a doe hit with one at 100 yards. The lungs were hanging out of the exit wound. As far as price and gun quality, keep in mind that you are not buying a target rifle. Find something in your price range, buy a few different brands of ammo and head to the range to see which one your gun groups with the best. All my rifles seem tp like Federal. I can also do really well with my hand loads. 130 grain on the .270 is all you need for deer. 130 to 150 grain on the -06. It works well for me.
