I had alternator problems for a long time till mine finally gave out. Including the auto tranny slipping and shifting weird, as well as cause my amp to turn off for a couple seconds when it's under a heavy load.

My fix was to buy a Bosch HO alternator. It's not much of an upgrade (102 amp instead of the factory 95), but that sum bitch was awesome. If you can find a shop (doesn't have to be a chevy specialist) that is a Bosch dealer, ask them if they'll order you one. I recommend it...
It's interesting that I'm researching about a failed alternator issue with my 98 Z28 and for the past few weeks I've had an odd 4th gear slip that happens when driving in traffic at about 60- 70mph with alot of letting off the throttle to keep distance. Shift into third then back into 4th and no slip. so weird. I'm curious, how would the alternator be related to a transmission issue?

F body alternators DO NOT LIKE HIGH RPMs. If you bang 6000+ RPMs regularly, you will eat alternators. They are not designed for it. Corvette units are better at dealing with revs, same deal with AC compressors. Get a high quality US rebuild and you'll be much better off. Best alternative is a HO unit with a larger pulley so the RPMs are kept down but you still get plenty of juice.

Eh depends which F body alternator you're talking about. The OEM one took it just fine all day. I took my OEM F body alternator to 6900 daily for years. TONNNNSS of other F body owners took their cammed, sprayed etc cars to over 6k for YEARS without issue. Think back to when the cars came out and we were all going to the track. There were f bodies every where you looked being revved past 6 and nobody was talking about their alternators failing there or here on the forums.

Now the aftermarket replacement ones from the parts store, they don't like over 6k. However they didn't do so well when not taken above 6k anyway. All the ones I had were barely keeping up as it was and when I took them past 6k they died. All the conversations we are having around alternators are around the replacements. Haven't really seen anyone upset over their original alternator.

Oddly the truck alternators that come on engines that don't rev past around 5k also take 7k like a champ. Lots of us are doing/have done that to them.

As far as compressors, they cut off under wide open throttle and above around 3500 rpm due to the programming in the pcm. So it doesn't really matter which compressor you use, the PCM turns it off to keep it from seeing high rpm anyway.

Only way it really would is if your voltage is so low the electronics can't do their job. It's not likely your alternator is causing your shifting issues.

Random thought, had some odd charging issues with the C5 and one of the posts on the starter was broken/corroded causing intermittent charging issues. May be worth looking at that.

Seen that before when the battery cable from the alt going to the battery goes over the the starter and the nut comes loose that holds them tight.

Has anyone tired this pully?

https://www.motionraceworks.com/prod...ernator-pulley

I am going to try it on the next alternator. I know my race car alternator says not to turn it over 19k and it looks like even with the 2.25 pully I have on it the car was spinning the alternator to 25k

I haven't, but that's a nice looking piece.
