Texas recently added even more restrictions to vehicle occupants regarding the wearing of seatbelts. Does anyone know exactly why there are seatbelt laws? I can understand most other traffic laws that protect other drivers, but why is the operator of a given vehicle legally obligated to put on a seatbelt?
If possible I'm looking for answers other than "to make money". This link fails to explain the reason behind the law. I'm sure we have plenty of informed people on the board. Does anyone have the answer?
It seems worth asking to me. Shouldn't drivers be able to choose if, how, and to what extent they protect themself?

well, the tickets are to make money. but i think really the reason is they dont want more corpses at the morgue. You never know, if we didn't have seat belt laws, some crazy lady may try suing the government or car companies for not enforcing seat belt, which led to her sons death. A hurt/broken neck may be better than flying out of the window to your death. Ultimately, yes, it is our own choise.

as long as it's an adult in question, i think it should be up to them whether they wear it or not... there's plenty of idiots in the world so it would help get rid of some of them lol... let natural selection take it's course

well, in my opinion seat belts actually hold you in place at high speed cornering and i like that aspect. but i think for the street they should be your choice but on the highway mandatory. and they would right way more tickets for people forgetting to put it on when they get on.

I am not going to complain. The seatbelt has saved my *** on two occasions. The 1st time it saved me was after an old man clipped me in his toyota camry as I was passing, my car veered off the hwy into a concrete culvert at 60+ MPH. I only ended up with bruised ribs. The 2nd time I was a passenger in 5 series my friend lost control of while showing off. We sailed off the road and into a raised concrete manhole, the car was absolutely destroyed, but we walked away. I can only imagine the carnage had we not been wearing belts.

Newton's three laws of motion. That should be reason enough to convince you to wear your seatbelt. If you don't mind being road kill, then just don't wear it and be done with it. I like not having my face on the windshield, so I wear mine whenever possible.

OP- if you dont want to wear a seatbelt, DONT. but dont come crying to anyone when some 85 your old grandma falls asleep behind the wheel on the freeway and makes her way to the side of your car causing you to fly out of the window and leave you like a squashed raccoon on the side of the road.
but hey, theres a quote that i feel may suit you for this one... "i'm the one who has to go when it's time for me to die, so let me live my life the way i want to while i'm still alive." so, undo your seatbelt and say F#@K you to anyone against it.....
as you pay your ticket,

The cost of putting body's back together is much greater when you don't wear your seatbelt. Its as simple as that. Minor accidents don't result in injures when wearing a belt vs smacking your cranium on the windshield which happens all the time in minor fender benders when you don't wear them. (head and spinal injuries and long term care are more costly than anyone realizes)
Plus the Govt has a responsibility to protect the people.. thats what laws are meant to do.
In this case its two for one.
