Holy crap.....this had to suck..
"This incident happened about a month ago in the Oshawa CP Rail yard which ships out the GM vehicles. One of the car guys who attaches and detaches the car haulers, accidentally unhooked a set of train cars without having the brakes applied. The Oshawa rail yard has a slight incline to it, so when the set of cars was unhooked from the engine it started to roll down the hill, it smashed through the stop block, then through the fence, and continued into the parking lot where GM stores the new vehicles that come off the line."

Hrmm... The link is blocked, but I am going to assume they weren't running an air brake system on the rail cars. These days most rails cars have air on them. As soon as a rail car is disconnected from a string of cars, or locomotive, an air line is automatically disconnected "throwing the air" and the brakes automatically apply.
I used to work at a plant as a chemical loader, locomotive operator, and a railcar switchman. The hopper cars we loaded weighed in excess of 250k lbs. a piece. They would be crazy not to have air on those cars. 4 cars would weigh 1mil, and imagine the momentum those cars would get going down even the slightest incline without brakes.

Looks like it happened at least a year or so ago, judging by the year of the "New" trucks.

(Just googled Oshawa CP Rail yard to find this)

That whole place just looks like a disaster waiting to happen, and I guess it did.

there is something else going on there. rail cars are like semi's. When the air is disconected they fail closed, or brakes on. Something else happened to cause this. It's a safety feature to fail closed....

I didn't see any air lines on those cars. They should be hanging down right beside the knuckles. It looks like there is no air on the cars. Just looks like a terribly ghetto operation they have going on there. Something like this is bound to happen sooner or later with a set up like this.
