A shotgun pattern at a distance that is in your house is only about 2-3x as big as a .45acp bullet. The point and click stuff is crap, sorry. You always need to get a good aim on your target in a civilian self defense situation. You are legally responsible for every round you fire, and missing can cost an innocent person, maybe your loved one, their life. Manslaughter plus losing everything in civil court is the price you may pay.

with any type of buckshot #1 or greater you will probably only have a 6-12 inches of spread within a 10 yard range. Since we are talking home protection, most homes wont have that the layout to force you to have to make a shot over that distance.

just get a few body gaurds to roam around your home at night w ak-47s and rottliers. and have seach lights on your roof. problem solved. and if they get by this sorry friend no weapon is going to save you

You can also string your house with explosives. Just flee to house and level it on the way out.

the pattern may be tight if it has a full choke and no, you may not have as accurate of round placement as you would with a .45. (if you have any experience with a handgun) and I'll admit, the point and click comment may have been a little over the top but which are you more likely to hit your target with.... also, shotgun rounds lose their lethality much quicker than a single slug does. and say one of the intruders takes a family member hostage, no matter what weapon you had, would you actually fire? I would say I am a better shot than most but i wouldnt take the chance...
What I don't understand is a lot of people's ammo choice in a shotgun. I was doing some reading the other night and someone posted up there first round was a nonlethal, 2nd and 3rd 00 buck then slug's. Just kill the mfer and get it over with, a nonlethal isn't going to hold any water as far as "I tried to warn them". The warning should have been hey ******* this isn't your home. My loading in all three shotguns are as follows: 00 buck, 00 buck, 00 buck, 00 buck, 00 buck, 00 buck, 00 buck, 00 buck. If that doesn't work I'll reach for the samurai sword and go pulp fiction on there ***.

I'd feel sorry for the poor bastard that takes my fiance hostage.

In TX it is legal to use lethal force to defend life AND property. Day, night, doesn't matter.
