Season started for us last weekend. One of our hunters killed a 192 pound 8 point. Not big horns, but a 5.5 year old that was a good management buck. Pretty decent size for east Texas.......we hunt MLD, so all deer are killed by permit. Rut should be just around the corner......

I shot this management buck last year in Freer.......168 pounds, taped 121 - 1\8"

Guys, take the pics out in the field! If its one thing I hate about deer hunting is all the damn tailgate pics. lol I like to see what type of land they came out of.

Seriously, I miss deer hunting in TX. Nothing like freezing your *** off with nothing around you for a few hours.

Well how did everyone fare this past weekend? I got a doe. I saw alot of good bucks (1-12 point & 2 -10 points) but I usually save my buck tags until after Thanksgiving when the rut is heavy.

I went with my girlfriend's stepdad on his bosses land down in gillespie county. Our group only got three bucks, the biggest one was about 260. There were a ton of does, along with some bucks, most of them not worth killing, some were on the other side of the fence(not the land we were hunting on)

I got a pretty decent 10 point that weighed in at about 270 out in Zephyr (Mills Co.) Haven't taped him yet, but its pretty nice. Got him with the good ol' .270 Win at 125 yards right in the heart at the crack of dawn. There were quite a few bucks, but not much worth shooting. I could hear 2 bucks going at it before daylight and by the time I could see them this guy came out from behind a big old oak tree to see what was going on. And that was all she wrote. lol

Good buck. My family lives in Brownwood and Blanket and usually get a few good bucks depending on the rain they get throughout the summer. My uncle got a 14 pt last season on his land. Good hunting country for sure.

Thanks! Yeah its definitely good hunting out there. According to the guy who owns a ranch just west of ours there was a huge 14 point that he shot at twice and missed. 42 years of hunting and he still gets buck fever! lol But I know I would too if it was like he had described it.

I guess hunting deer gets boring...

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/...e/7286180.html

Man mistakes wife for deer, shoots and kills her

HEIDELBERG, Miss. — Officials are investigating a deadly hunting incident in Jasper County.

WDAM-TV reports that the incident involved a husband and wife who were hunting Saturday and became separated near Heidelberg. The husband reportedly shot his wife after mistaking her for a deer.

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks is investigating the incident, along with the Jasper County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff's investigator Thad Windham confirmed a fatal shooting had occurred, but referred questions to the wildlife agency. An agency spokesman James Walker couldn't be reached immediately for comment Monday.

I just dont get really amped up about deer hunting anymore. I help guide paying customers on one of my friends MLD high fence ranches. So after a few months of sitting with customers, january rolls around and then its time to shoot the cull bucks and how ever many does the biologists says to kill, usually 20-30, I get tired of cleaning, shooting, or even looking at deer.

My main form of hunting here lately has been coyote hunting. I got a few callers and decoys and it is alot of fun if you havent ever done it. I also look forward to the spring and heading up north to shoot prairie dogs, it has to be the most fun you can have with a gun.

On a serious note it is very hard to mistake a person for a deer. No idea what he was thinking.

Yea I have done some varmit hunting and its alot of fun and is definitly a adrenaline rush espicially hunting animals at night.

My dad always taught me growing up that if I ever lose that buck fever feeling when hunting then I should definitly give it up then because it takes the fun/sport out of it. Well I still havent lost that feeling and I have taken many deer in my lifetime so until that day comes I still get my thrill out of it.

Coyotes and Varmits are a hell of a lot of fun. Lots of shooting (headshots) without the cleaning.

I shoot prairie dogs with a 17. That little ruger is a TON of fun.

Elevate 30" at 300 yds and adjust for windage, pull the trigger, recover from the recoil and watch the bullet hit

I've got a NEF .17 HMR that is fun as hell to shoot. I sure wouldn't put it out past 200 yards though.

Yeah mines a 17HMR too, and like I said you definitely have to elevate and compensate for windage but the recoil is so small that at that distance you can recover from the recoil and watch where the bullet hits and adjust accordingly. Plus your shoulder doesnt get sore and your wallet isnt hurt too much after a day of shooting versus the normal 22-250s that most seem to shoot. It carrys enough *** behind it to kill out to about 500 yds. Ive hit a few prairie dogs out about that far, never really tried to dial one in further than that though. At 500 yds it didnt exit but the good thing about those little bastards are, if you wound one the rest of the town will eat their ***. Damn cannabals
