Default Heads and intake info?

I'm new to the LS motors but been doing the old school stuff for awhile my question is I have a 2001 or so 6.0 out of a 2500. The heads that are on it are the 317's I'm building a N/A motor mild so I want the best combo I can.

Are the 317 heads ok or should I find a different casting?
Is the stock intake ok if not what stock intake is good?

This is going to be a stock bottom end with all ARP bolts with maybe a mahle piston so I can put a small shot later on! Also I'm looking for around 400hp to the wheels on motor.. Thanks

from what i know about heads and ls motors

317 heads will lower your compression which is great for boost but not so good na

243 heads will bump your compression.

243's flow the best, then 241's for an NA motor

im not 100% sure but you may be able to use LS3 heads which from what i have read will bump compression to 10:0:1 or 10:5:1 compression.
the part im not to sure about is if the motor need to be stroked to a 408.....

hope this helps. if im wrong someone please correct me if im wrong on anything

If I'm not mistaken the 317 heads can be milled and will be same as 243.

I would run the 243 heads if you can. Getting compression back in the motor will be most important, in my opinion. If you have an Lq4 I would stay away from LS3 style heads because there will not be enough compression in the motor, it would be a real dog down low. For intake I would go either LS6 or FAST if you can, they provide good power and streetability. A 36lb injector would hold this type of setup no problem, and give you some room to grow for later.

317 heads can be milled to match an LS6 chamber size, but keep in mind you kill clearance when you do that. If you do put pistons in the motor thats not an issue because they have valve reliefs, but if its on a stock piston there probably wouldn't be enough room for a decent sized cam.

Ok sweet... The motor came out of a 2002 HD2500 I think! I do know it has the 24 tooth wheel on the crank.

This mite be a dumb question what what did the 243 heads come on and I've had a few tell me to find the L92 head are these the same head if not what did the L92 come on?

243/799 heads came on 01-04 Z06 corvettes, and any LS2 corvette. 243/799s are called LS6 castings. L92/LS3 heads came on many late model vehicles as they are the primary style head for the 6.2l motors. You can also tell the difference by looking at the intake port, L92/LS3 heads are rectangle port heads when LS6s are cathedral port.
