No such thing as a bulletproof transmissions. They will break sooner or later. That shaft and the drum it splines into takes a beating. Ive notice it likes to leak where it splines into the drum there is a nice sleave that can fix this problem and the problem of the drum cracking causing the shaft to slide out sometimes breaking the case.

BTW do you guys offer ECU settings for your trans? Either a HP Tuners / EFI Live file or just table values I can cut & paste?
We do all the shift improvements and pressure adjustments in the transmissions its self. We recommend putting the settings in the ECM back to stock or close to stock.

Any transmission might give out on you but I built a bulletproof transmission that was $4K just in parts no labor and it would find some reason to be pulled back out. Just my $.02
If he was competitively racing his TBSS with big horsepower I would agree with you. But a well built 4L70e in a more conservitive setup will hold up just fine.

Also, how in the world did you put $4000 in just parts into a 4L60e? Our Level 7 has every quality high performance part possible for a 4L60e in it and the whole transmission is $3995 without the SFI bellhousing.

It took a couple builds replacing broke parts and upgrading to get there but I did it. I broke from one end to the other a couple times. shitty part is the car was only making about 500 to the wheels and broke that many parts. I also had the stock tranny tune in the car because everyone said it was the tune that caused the issues. even changed the case to take that out of the equation. Only good thing I can say is that I can have the transmission out of the car in 30mins and know exactly what tools to grab to get it out.

To the OP, I have a stock 4L70 if you want to have a spare to build instead of the one in the truck.

Ahh I see. That's very unusual. That kindof breakage under that low of power must have been assembly issues. We have 4L60e transmissions behind 1000+rwhp, 800+ftlb, 3600lbs race weight cars and never experienced damage like that.

well, I am not 100% on if I was building them right. just made them where they would go down the road. Here where some of the good breakages.

I would do a stock 4L80e w/a shift kit swap if you're just going with a cam. Call Phoenix Transmissions in Weatherford, TX. They used my Saab as a guinea pig for the AWD setup. They can help you with the 2WD also.

I'll have to look into a 4l80 swap. I'm sure down the road I'll add some more mods so if it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg I will do it. It seems no matter what I do it is gonna cost at least $2500.

What does matter is which one will hold up the power for the longest with the least problems in the long run.

Oh, the TBSS has 4L60E? I've gone thru 2 in my Impala SS. Phoenix Transmission in Weatherford built me a Stage 1, they said was good up to 450-500 w/a 1900-2000 stall. It's been solid & they did a no questions asked warranty work after a wreck. Lots of the ImpSS guys have taken their 4L60Es to Phoenix. I think I paid around $1700 (it's been a few years, but I know I've got the receipt).
