Zachs makes a rub thats really good. Comes in a bag. You can get it at HEB. I use their brisket rub as well. Its really good. We do ribs on the smoker then in the oven wrapped for a while.

flip once quickly, then pour marinade on top while on the grill, let it cook in for 2 minutes, flip once more until desired cook (well, medium, etc).
I agree with everything here but the canary mustang in the photo on an LS engine only forum.

I usually go with a dry rub, kosher salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, little mustard and paprika, real simple, but pretty tasty.

The last ribs I did, I just marinated them in beer and OJ with some onions and a few spices thrown in. They were pretty tastey that way.

I mix my own dry rub though.
Garlic, onion, cayenne, cumin, brown sugar, salt, black pepper, white pepper, oregano, basil, thyme, sage, curry, anise, mustard, rosemary, etc.
What I use depends on what I'm cooking and what I'm going for. Ex) I'll use lavender, garlic, and herbs de provence for lamb once, but use a more traditional BBQ rub another time.
For poultry I prefer to use brines.
I enjoy experimenting with different flavors.

beef ribs? ...boil 'em first, rub with whatever you like - I prefer caribbean jerk rub on beef and pork with a healthy dose of course ground black pepper added in, and throw directly on the fire just long enough to give 'em a good crust

pork ribs (much better imho), coat in the same rub, smoke at least a half day with either mesquite or oak, and again throw directly on the fire just long enough to give a crust

Ya'll have great recommendations with rubs but beleive me just add a tad bit of cinnamon to your rub and it will give you a flavor on the ribs that is awesome. I bbq alot and try all different rubs, ingredients and methods. Cam72aro is right about using the oven and the pit. I usually start in the oven for about 3 hrs wrapped @ 225 and then move to the pit unwrapped for a short time, then for atleast another 1-3 hours or longer wrapped again. Also try white grape juice to marinate any type of pork, it sweetens up the pork nicely.

Gonna go that route. I soaked wood chips in red wine, wrapped in foil and threw on the gas grill. Low and slow for the next 2 hours. Spray with apple cider and topped off with some stubbs.

I usually make the rub hot and the sauce sweet.

For the rub I usually look at a lot of Steve Raichlen rubs and make changes if I get bored.
