Default Which radar detector would you pick?

About a week ago, I bought a Cobra XRS-9845. It's been good so far, but yesterday, my work clearanced out our last Beltronics V-995 for a ridiculously low price. I'm thinking of buying the Beltronics and selling the Cobra. Is this Beltronics model any good? Would it be worth using over the Cobra? I'd love a V1 or Escort, but just can't afford one right now.

Save your money for mods. One of my best friends is an officer in charge of traffic enforcement at a local PD. His advice? Don't buy a detector. First, it almost guarantees you get a ticket if you get pulled over and the cop sees it. Second, radar detectors were useful when cops were running radar speed control, but they offer almost no protection or advantage anymore. Most police use optical speed control now. Unless you're faster than the speed of light, and I don't think there's a single car on LS1tech that is, the cop knows how fast you were going just as your detector tells you that you were hit by speed control. Use the cash elsewhere.

x2 I used to run detectors, but I now understand how useless they are. My first of 2 tickets (ever) was with my detector. I popped over a hill and was hit with laser. By the time I got the warning from the detector, the lights were already flashing on the cruiser.

Plus all of the false alarms get quite annoying and make you paranoid.

it really depends where you live about laser. not all areas use laser yet.

as for the OP's question about which radar to get anything is better than a cobra. as for the v-995 if i remember correctly it is a good unit. a better question would be what is your buget on a radar? whistler has good detectors that aren't really that expensive.

V1 or Escort are the way to go....don't waste your $$$ on anything else. It will pay for itself...at least in my case it has.

I have one, it's helpful in some situation, but not really in speed traps when they use laser or are being tricksters about how they shoot laser. But it has helped me a bunch on knowing where they are on the highway.

Escort 8500 or V1 only two options.

The 9500 is just a more expensive 8500. You can find nice used 8500's for $150-200.

As I was doing 95 up the freeway my V1 saved my *** from a state trooper, within the last 15 minutes. Kind of ironic I just pulled over to fill up and read some tech posts and saw this.

Cobra sucks. Yes the beltronics would be an upgrade, but as noted above the best results will be a used (craigslist?) unit from a quality manufacturer, i.e. Escort/Valentine.

But if they are waiting for you to come up over a hill and they turn the radar on once they see you, then they more than likely will get you like they just got me.

As I sit on the side of the road with a state trooper behind me.

I have had my escort for about a year an it's saved me alot of times. The get you over the hill because the radar need s straight signal to read a cop so it can't read thru a hill. I was saved many time when I get on the highway it would go off even if they're behind me which they sometimes are. Just use common sense if they can see that your going faster than the cars around you they will pull you over some cops sometimes have their radars off so it's half and half. Just don't get over confident and think you'll never get pulled over with one. In the end the radar will pay its self off. So that being said I'm selling my escort if anyone is interested some thing came up and I have to sell it

I would get the beltronics . They are pretty much the same as passport. I have a v1 and an escort . They are both rad but Laser will catch you . If they are using k,x, or ka band you can be protected .

Please don't hate me, I feel your pain since I just got a ticket earlier this month, 3 days before a court date for a ticket back in march but when I read the post about it saving your ***, and then less than an hour later you getting pulled over, it made me laugh a little. I think it's just the irony of it being so close in time to each other. Hope it wasn't too bad brotha

Lol, I thought it was quite ironic. Luckily I got a warning which is super rare for me. I've been trying to clean up my driving record. My insurance is ridiculous. I haven't got a ticket that actually stuck in a while.

I've had my Beltronics RX65 for years, and it's saved me a number of times. I mostly only use it on long trips or driving through less populated areas (no laser). It was worth the money.
