IMO, Americans are too far removed from their food source and have lost much of their self reliance. Raising something for food is a good thing to know and practice.

Sorry for being unclear, i am looking for hens i guess. I heard roosters are just a pain in the ***. The only thing that worries me is when you purchase them how can you tell a difference between the roosters and a female?

If they're adults, the rooster has a larger comb and will have longer tail feathers. Depending on the breed the rooster will be more ornate.

Don't get the basic white. Get a laying breed.

If you don't have a HOA look at your city laws. They may allow 6 hens and no roosters or something like that.

You can specify a straight run of pullets, but you very well may get some cockrels in the batch. Remember what I said about dumplings? Just butcher the roosters. Problem solved.

He would keep a radio in the coop. To keep the chickens awake and keep feeding. The chickens grew huge and they got to the point where they could no longer stand to feed and would literally sit and eat. LOL! I saw this.

I think the key piece of the puzzle here is how big your freezer is.
