The hell with folks being stuck in traffic, glad to hear you were not hurt.

I had this happen to me on my 99 trailblazer, I felt something was not right and slowed down. Just as I stopped the wheel fell off.

I had this happen to me twice on my 1965 Ford Truck.. Both time front right wheel.

The first time it happened my brother was with me.....When the tire came off the first thing out of my mouth was COOOOOL you see the sparks "As the tire was passing us up" lol it was so late at night you could see that **** good... I never found the rim and tire..
Come to find out when my brother took the truck to get the
brakes fixed he took that **** to JUST for Brakes…… When they replaced the drums.. they didn’t know to use my studs I had for my new wheels.

So Just for brakes had to pay for it all… The day we get it back my brother goes to get the truck it didn’t make it 2 miles and the wheel flies off again.. They did the same **** all over again … This time it did a lot of damage … No more taken it back to them ******* lol… I was a junior in High school when this happened..1996…

Man sorry to hear that. When I had just bought my 99 WS6 in '03, a few months later when I was washing my car, I noticed a lug was missing. When I looked the wheel stud was sheared off. So I bought a stud to replace it and a new lug. Another month later, another lug and stud. Replaced that one too only to have another lug and stud fall off. Even though these were all different wheels, freaked the hell out of me so I bought a brand new set of 20 studs and 20 lugs and had them all replaced. Dont know what the hell was going on since I would only drive the car less than 9k miles/year at the time. Must have been some kind of defect.

It almost happened to me when I hit a bad bump. Snapped 2 of the studs on the right front wheel and saw it when I got to the tuner. He tuned it and got a number for the tow company he uses. I had to have it towed about 100 miles back to my house (I have AAA prime or gold, whatever they call it so I only had to pay tolls), and I replaced them all with arp wheel studs.

Sounds like you and the op had the lugs way to tight. Over tightening makes them brake off at the stud.

I always set my lugs at 100 ft. lbs. Never had any problems.

Wouldnt doubt it. After I got them switched out, I was good to go but I never looked into it.

1) loose
2) over tightened and that stretched the studs so they broke
3) cross threaded and they broke

Choose one.
