I have to dissagree. To make a new diesel last, you need to remove the emissions crap and get a propper tune in it. Even older diesels will last longer if they are modded correctly. My 93 Cummins 4x4 is closing in on 30mpg, makes more power than stock, but has lower egts and less smoke than factory. As for overworking a diesel, thats a joke right? Maybe these new light duty jokes that the manufactuers are throwing at us, but not a real diesel, Cummins, Cat, Detriot, Mac, Perkins etc.

We have a 2010 2500 crew cab short bed 4x4. The truck has a 12 inch lift on 40x15.50-20's and 4.88 gears. We have a K&n intake and Dpf delete and programmer. We average 17mpg on hwy 70-75 and pulling a loaded 14K lb trailer we get right at 10.5-11 mpg. Also we keep our H&S programmer on the lowest setting with power added.

Clearly, you missed my "near stock" words in that comment. I owned a 2008 6.7 Cummins for 4 years. Considering I had them on my truck, I am well aware of deletes and tuners. My truck was deleted and tuned running 120-175hp power levels for 3.5 years and it got (18-22mpg @ 65mph hand calculated depending on weather/terrain) 5 mpg better than stock with those mods. I consider a CAI, deletes and a (tow) 60hp tune "near stock".

And, yes. You can "overwork" anything mechanical. That includes diesel engines, my friend.

I'll go ahead and call bullshit on your 30mpg claim. Maybe in 6th gear at 40mph with a tailwind on a flat road.

When you eliminate the dpf, you need to retune or you will have problems. If you change something that requires a retune isnt near stock in my eyes.

Industrial diesels are designed to operate at 100% power continuously, for the entire life of the motor. My uncles old massey tractor has over 15,000 hours on its Perkins, and any time its running, its just under redline(pto rpm). You wont see a powerjoke do that.

You can call bs all you want. Plus, if you can find a 6th gear on my truck, Ill give you 10 grand. Its a 93, read before posting. But, to anyone who isnt an idiot when it comes to diesels, can tell you that a 89-93 Cummins has a VE pump. With the right turbo, you can be fully spooled below 1000rpm. The lower rpm you can cruise without bogging, the better fuel economy you get. My goal for the truck is 35mpg. And i will be doing it with 37 or 38 inch tires. If you are an idiot who knows nothing about diesels, dont try to tell me what kinda mileage i can get, just go play with your spark plugs.

Oh yea, I bet you think a Cummins has glow plugs too.

That is BS pure and simple. You are talking about something with the airodynamics of a brick. You need to verify that actual mielage and hand calculate everything. People like you are why everyone makes fun of cummins owners making outlandish mileage claims.

Its a 93, it is hand calculated. No overhead to do it for me. According to odometer, I was getting 26mpg. The 30mpg number came froms a friends handheld gps. 18gal got me 537 miles on his gps. Him and his powerchoke driving buddies doubted i was making 20, since the best they can manage is 15. Now, Ive probably got over 100 hours into tuning and testing, but thats what it took to get it close. Ive still got more to go, but Im waiting for better injectors. Another 6-8 months and Ill have the truck completly restored and looking better than anything new on the lot. It already runs better. Some new ones are quicker, but Ill give that up for the mileage, reliability, low parts cost and ease of maint.

I miss my 06 LBZ all the time, wish I wouldve never gotten rid of it. Turboback exhaust and an EFI tune got me 21 running 75, threw heavy *** 20s with 35" toyo mts and that dropped to just under 18. Sold it with 115K on it, only had a glow plug replaced and a computer reflash. If a Dmax would fit in my new garage there would be one in there so I had to settle for a half ton with a midget bed.

I like black trucks and they dont like being parked outside and Im too lazy to constantly wash my truck

Its getting a blower and quite a few other mods so hopefully it will tow semi-close to what my Dmax did. If you really want a Dmax make sure to get an 06 or newer. The 6 speed trans is worth the extra cost for the newer ones alone.

Sheesh, you too.

Hand calc your mileage and correct for tire size. No way you are getting 26 on the highway.

Not necessarily.

I know of several 2008+ and 2010+ Dodge 6.7's with 450k+ miles and the entire emissions equipment is intact, because they hotshot with them and don't want added DOT attention. The DPF has been replaced on 1 or 2 of them, but apart from regular maintenance...nothing major. I believe 1 has had a turbo replaced.

Also, the trans rebuild on a Dodge averages 3k for stock, but you can have a moderately built one done for 5k, and a near bulletproof one for 8k.

Your point is? Half a million miles isnt many miles on a real diesel. The light duty guys started that crap. My old big cam Cummins got its first inframe at over 2,000,000 miles. Still ran fine, just had alot of blow-by.

I hate automatics, so I know nothing and care even less about them. I know the guys at Val-Air, so a good clutch is easy.
