Default "Hollow" Exhaust Sound

I absolutely love everything about F-bodies, but lately everyone and their mother in my neighborhood has been been getting a 'new edge' fox body, and dare I say it, the exhaust note has been growing on me... I don't know what the technical term for it is, but how can I get my T/A to have that 'hollow' exhaust note? Does it have to do with the fox body or is it their exhaust? I know that the best (IMO, of course) sounding ones in terms of 'hollowness' are Flowmaster 44's. It's something that has puzzled me for a while, so I figured asking couldn't hurt. Thanks everyone!

I always thought the Mufflex 4" or Corsa sounded hollow on f-body's.

Spintech mufflers will also do it, I prefer them over flowmasters, look up some you tube clips.

i always thought it was because of lower compression that mustangs sound better.....i put a 5.3 in my t/a and the exhaust note changed dramatically....heres example...

this video is with my factory ls1 with headers and "faux-master"....

here it is with stock 5.3 with same exhaust setup

I throw bullets on everything because they are cheap and I enjoy the sound. I hate the way blowmasters sound on LS platforms, but I believe they have that hollow sound you speak of.

It has to do with the cylinder head shape, the Firing order, the exhaust runner pairings and header design, location of X or H crossover, the muffler.... Pretty much everything.

Lsx's will pretty much always sound like a truck.

One exception would be crossover type design.

With all that said, The corsa system on Vettes sounds pretty awesome

180* headers:

Or you can get catless headers and a Corsa catback:

this is the real answer, all of the above has more to do with it than the muffler... my car doesn't sound anything like a truck though... switching to a true dual setup if you haven't already, removing the cats, a good x-pipe and free flowing mufflers, and a cam should give you a good hollow sound... not like a mustang but good nonetheless

Shameful...F-body owners practically putting Crustangs on a pedestal.
I always thought their exhausts sounded like it's made out of tin. IMO
It doesn't have that low guttural/growl sound like most f-bodies do. Love that sound.

The problem with 4th gens is the worthless transverse muffler. Put duals on a 4th gen with blowmasters and they sound hollow like they do on a mustang. I've heard them on TBSS, trucks, c4, c3, 1st and 2nd gen fbodies and many old muscle cars. Dual blowmasters have the same sound as fox bodies. So no, I don't buy the chamber design and firing order concept. The chamber on a fox 5.0 to a 4.6 sohc, to 4.6 dohc, to the new 5.0 is different but the sound is still the same. Now change only the muffler to magnaflows on the same mustangs and the hollow sound is gone.

Kind of a silly thing to aspire to if you ask me. They sound hollow because of low compression and crappy heads. As soon as you go into the motor and do some real mods to them they lose the hollow sounds.

11.5 compression and a 232/234 cam makes for a nice sounding LS1

Muffler's will only change tone, pitch, volume, and "cleaning" up the sound. Think about this, when you research mufflers they review based on how loud it gets, raspiness, drone, and hi-low pitch.

Heads and headers have the biggest impact IMO. It'll be hard to make a 2V sound anything like a 3V or 4V OHC.
