Default tire carnage; pics

Not sure what happened but after a hard 1-2 shift the car got extremely squirrelly and when I let off smoke and vibrations everywhere

Thinking about just going to a set of 18's, the 17x11 did survive without damage

That sucks, have had tire problems here and there. My front left tire blew on my s10 a couple months ago, bent the 15x3.5 in one spot, nothing bad.

That is wild, I don't think I have ever seen a tire failure like that before.

Glad this wasn't worse. I am also curious what tire this was and how long you have had it.

Yeah going to have to agree with everything said above. Never seen something like that before either. A few weeks ago some friends of ours were at the OKC Street Car takeover and shredded their tire, but it didn't look like that!

To be fair they have been in my garage for at least six years but show no signs of cracking or rotting. Pressure was good and the other side of the tire that blew out does not have wear marks on the side wall from low pressure driving

I'll take an up close picture of the damaged tire tonight, this pic was two weeks ago

Could it have come apart because of that stretch?

I really doubt the stretch had anything to do with it, dot stamp is cx-5n. I'm assuming November 2005

Its almost like the sidewall separated exactly where it meets the tread pattern. I guess it could have been the stretch but it went on the rim with no problems a couple months ago

You got lucky it happened like it did. I'm betting it was the tire's age that caused that.

275/40/17 on an 11" wide wheel is in specs. I doubt thats what caused it.

Thanks for the tip, the stamp is only on one side of the tire

the 6th week of 08... pretty old. age def played a factor in the tire failure. it doesn't matter if your tire was never in the sun, can almost guarantee the tire had some cracks in it and when you put more stress on the tire it finally gave way. lucky it didn't shred your bumper. ive seen a tire where the tread separated from the steel belts and when that happens it completely demolishes everything in its path. I saw one take out the entire hump on the rear fender of a dually.
