Need advice on head bolt thread repair??

Default Need advice on head bolt thread repair??

So took head off to repair a stripped plug thread. Reinstalled head and farthest rear bolt under valve cover got tight but didn't click torque wrench no matter what I did...put back together...crossed fingers...leaked small amount of coolant...oil is milkshake...ouch. See that "Timesert" tool to rethread is 580$. Ouch again. What options do I have and what would shop charge to fix and reinstall head?Any shop suggestions on the North side? Thanks

Good luck finding a shop to fix it for less than the timesert. Sometimes it's best to bite the bullet and pull the motor. Timesert is really the only decent fix. You may also consider making the move to studs at this point. Just be damn sure the bolt holes are good and clean so you don't crack the block.

I hope a shop wouldn't be that steep. I have the whole top end off. All I need is thread repaired and head reinstalled. I will reinstall everything else. I did the head install steps meticulously and still had prob so thinking may let shop give it a go.I might give it one more try if I could loan/rent tool!!! Head studs are a thought too!

I'd try a head stud first. Then a head stud coated in jb weld second lol

So is there a chance that a stud will hold even if bolt wont torque to spec? Was thinking go that way but thought I had to repair thread in block before installing studs?

A stud will probably not hold.

Unless it was a aftermarket block, I would take my losses and find a new block.

Theoretically there is a chance it would work. However I imagine as the engine temperatures get higher the metal expands and you would be having the same problem again. The threads would slip and cause the same head gasket issue.

If it's an original block in your low mileage car it is probably worth having a machine shop go over it to make it right.

The Kent Moore J-42385-100 head bolt repair kit is available as a rental. See:

Be aware...there are several versions of the kits. There are both Time-Sert and Kent Moore versions.

Both use the same Time-Sert tools, but are packaged in different ways.

The Kent Moore version J-42385-100 kit can repair both head and main bolts. But does require some additional tools from the Kent Moore J-42385-300 kit.

The Time-Sert version J-42385-100 just does the head bolts.

The Time-Sert version J-42385-300 just does main bearing bolts.

Although both Time-Sert and Kent Moore have a J-42385-300 kit. They are 2 completely different kits and are not interchangeable in any way . It can be confusing...


Our rental kits come with all the required tools.
