Default S.A.M questions

hey guys, i am very strongly considering heading down to houston to go to SAM in the late summer/fall, it seems that quite a few of you shop guys have gone there. It seems they are about the best there is, about the only school that is geared toward performance work only

I would like to get a little info from any of you, about the area where the school is, jobs around there, places to hang out, etc. i'd def like to come down and check the city out beforehand, my aunt lives there

heres a couple questions i have....
whats the average age of the students,im 23?
do they cover any PCM tuning type stuff?
how many of you live in that area of town?

or anything else you want to add, post it or you can PM me if you want....thanks in advance!

You can call Chuck at HPE because there was a instructor that helps with that shop if I remeber correctly. Chuck may be able to get you in touch with him.

they have gotten into the PCM tuning stuff a bit more than Fran suggested. It's been ages since he went through that part.

And SAM has some kind of a deal with an apartment complex that is pretty nearby (3 blocks), but do not be afraid to look elsewhere...

Its a good school you get out what you put into it.
If you have no work ethic then you wont learn half of what you should.

Also do not move into Castlewood if you have a remotely nice car. It will be screwed up by the time you leave. If the roads dont screw it up all the none driving **** with no insurance sure will.

I so tired of this place I wanna kill everyone in the office down there. My truck had not one scratch on it when I moved here. It has already been fixed once that was 2000+ dollars and it now has over 2000 dollars worth of damage again that im not gettin fixed till I leave this place.

I agree with all these guys, if you are seriously looking into getting a job in the racing industry this is the school. I started there two years ago and I am now 23, but in my graduating class one student went to Gibbs porting heads, one to Yates running a CK-21, one to Detriot and I am currently at HPE building the motors. The owner also went to SAM, so there are alot of people getting good jobs. If you do decide to go you need to stay sun up to sundown so you can to learn everything you can and you need to practice machining blocks all the time. I had machining experiance before I went to SAM witch is a plus. Plus DON'T live at Castlewood its a cockroach infested shitbox, but it is somewhat cheap and a mile away from the school.I also got hit by a uninsured motorist. Good look on your decision and you can PM me if you need anything.

Like the other students are saying though it's ALL about what you do for yourself there and how much you WANT to learn. We have guys that want it to just happen or soak in and it won't unless you listen and ask questions and really build motors etc.

The guys that are serious though, all seem to learn a lot and go places. The economy will also slowly get better and there will be more and more jobs but that's not under anyone's control really. You will learn as much as you want to like any other school. If you are into this stuff a lot you will love it.
