The LM1 engine?

Default The LM1 engine?

What can anyone tell me about them? We have a 79 z-28 and the only thing I know is that it is an f-body and it really does have true duel exhaust and an LM1 engine. When inspection time comes, will it pass (I worry because if the exhaust)? It really is a monster. I wanted to put bigger rims on it, but my honey said he wants to keep the original ones. Also, I think we are gonna repaint it. Right now, it is an ocean blue metallic. He likes it, I don't. I think maybe...darker blue? I wish I had a digital camera so I can send pics. Any knowledge or suggestions?

um it is over 25 years old it shouldnt have to pass emissions
i never titled mine in TX
as to the engine kinda a turd 175 HP 270lbft, in CA it was only 160 HP and only avalible with a auto. but other states the auto was still 175. i have also seen that they were actually 170 hp instead of 175 but i really dont think 5 hp matters.

the rims are sweet keep the originals even if you get new ones they arent cheep to replace.

if it is a T-top car keep it inside in the rain they leak. but they rock in nice weather.

anything else about it just let me know i researched them pretty heavily see sig for my car

From what I was told the engine is very similar to what was in the corvette. The car itself is a restore project. It is my boyfriend's valentines day gift and so far, parts that needed replacing cost me about $2,000.00. The car is pretty powerful though. I have driven it and then a friend's supercharged lincoln mark VIII and it felt like a very similar experience. It still needs alot of work though Also, alot of the parts in the engine are not stock, so that might have something to do with it. As far as what he has done to it, I'll have to ask him and his cousins (they all have had something to do with rebuilding it) so I know a little more about what I'm talking about. There goes my natural hair color again. Thanks for the response. I need all the help I can get. I am surrounded by mechanics and can't speak the language yet, but I'm learning quickly.

the LM1 had to have been worked on because it is a turd. but the block is a good block. the heads and intake are worthless. good luck.

I know for sure the heads were replaced, but I have no idea what kind they were replaced with. Also, someone told me it does not need a sniffer test, but if they look at the exhaust, it won't pass because it is a true duel. I guess I'll find out when the time comes.

If that thing is a monster, its because its had some work done. The motor must not be stock. that car had about as much power stock as most of todays 4cylinder hondas, but weighs about 1000lbs more.

I am slowly figuring that out...I feel like I am in Dr. Frankenstein's lab everytime I go into the garage. I only found out the heads were "altered" by looking at the wierd screws holding everything where it should be. The guys are acting like a bunch of mad (crazy) geniuses every time I ask a question. I think I need a language translation dictionary every time one of them opens his mouth. I think that my boyfriend"s cousins' girlfriends all feel the same as I do (Confused all of the time) The work is not a surprise. I think Jason's cousin, was literally put through school by NASCAR. They sent him on an automotive scholarship to their school somewhere in Montana. He specializes in electrical, but knows the rest really well. I may not want to drive the car by the time he gets through with it. I think he has one too, same year. Go figure .

I have a 77 442 and I never had a problem getting it inspected. I added true duals too and I never had a problem. I think you should be ok. The nice thing is no more emissions testing. I never had a problem passing but its nice to know that I could do some work and not have to worry about passing emissions

Not having to worry about the sniffer test is a plus. The latest project I heard about is adding an engine cooling system similar to what is in a mercedes to boost the Horse Power. I'll figure it out later. I'm just happy that he won't have to undo the exhaust after all the time and work that has gone into it. Thanks everyone!
