Local Racer given 6 months to live
Off of my local car board. If anyone knows him or knows the track, try and spread the word.
We have a gentleman who races with us, and has been racing here for years, who has been given 6 months to live, maybe less. His name is Kermit Tieken. He drives a blue and white VW Bug out at our track on Friday and Saturday nights, which actually runs pretty quick. I've only known Kermit for a little less than a year since we took over, but if you look up the word "nice" in the dictionary, you would see his picture there.
I saw him Saturday night after I got word of his situation. He was here for his last race. He was basically using Saturday night as a way to get the word out that he was selling all of his racing equipment. He told us he needed to sell it so that he could cover his burial expenses so his family wouldn't be hindered by that burden.
This has been tearing my wife and I up. I decided that I am going to do some sort of fundraiser race/event for him on the 23rd of April. I don't have all the details yet, but it's going to be as big as we can make it. We are going to donate half of the gate fees and all of the sponsorship revenues from that event to Kermit.
My goal is to generate enough donations on or before the event to cover those costs so that he can race until he is physically unable to do so any longer. I hate the thought of him having to sell everything and then just wait around to die.
If you can't make it to the race, then tell as many people as you can about it. Forward it in e-mails, message boards, or whereever. The more people we have out here that night, the more we can give to Kermit and his family.
If there is anything you might be able to donate for this event, it would be greatly appreciated more than you will ever know. We will have donation points at the track and also on our website at www.templeacademy.com. No donation would be too small, I don't care if it's the spare change between your couch cushions. I'm not one to put my hand out, but I'm doing so now. Thank you for your time and please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Here is Greg's contact info (track owner) if you would like to help:

I guess that's another way donations could be made. Just send a check or money order to the address above made out to Kermit Tieken.

We have a link for PayPal donations on the front page of our website at www.templeacademy.com. You can either click the link there, or make a PayPal payment to the e-mail address greg@tempelacademy.com and just put in the notes Kermit Tieken Fundraiser.
Thanks!

Here was my reply on the local (Austin) board. Just wanted to post it here to support what Greg is saying:
I know Kermit personally and I second everything that Greg said about him. Have shot the breeze many a time with him in the pits and staging lanes of TAD and SAR and he was about the nicest gentleman you would ever encounter. I will always remember his surprisingly quick bug and the blue jumpsuit that he would always wear to the track. It was like his "racing uniform" and while he took the sport seriously, he was always a gracious winner and never a sore loser.
I will be in Chicago on a business trip the night of the event, but I am going to the VP of my company that I work directly for and see if we can help with sponsorship.
Please come out and support Kermit. Great racer and great guy.
