Rita is all talk....
yeah, because I highly doubt that they're going to open both sides of I-45 and I-10 to flow traffic back into Houston
This could have easily been the worst disaster in American History. Had it come in west of Houston, and not dropped as much windspeed we'd be in a real jam. Never take anything for granted. We're just very fortunate.
Yeah, I don't know what forecast you are watching, but Rits will be making landfall with weak CAT3 to weak CAT4 winds. For those that evacuated, better safe than sorry. I'm sure you wouldn't be feeling sorry for those that evacuated if this storm remained a CAT5, huh?

Common sense at it's finest!
I think some might be failing to realize that when you deal with something this serious, inconvenience is worth effort. The next time it might not weaken, and I think many more people that should leave the next time will stay because they will think they can dodge the bullet everytime . What's good about this for Houston and places that avoid as much disaster as was predicted, is off course that many deaths and even loss of homes might be avoided. (Although it's not over yet.) The Bad thing is that people start to think it won't happen and that they will keep dodging bullets.
Look at many in New Orleans that wished they had left. Those hundreds or more that died were probably thinking that same thing right before they died.

Another good post. Good too see there is still common sense out there. Especailly on this board.
When I notice people these days, and even more so on this board, it's almost sad to see what is in the minds of grown men and women these days. Almost like thery have the minds off a pre-teen.

I feel for our neighbors east of here in B/PA and into LA.
We're fortunate that we had some dry air, and a cool eddy which sapped some of the strength of this beast. Had it moved faster and hit with its strength from 36 hrs ago it would have been a catacylismic event. Winds sustained at 185 and gusts to 215 is plain mean no matter how you slice it...
Again, had it hit more west of here no one would be playing down this storm... Its still a powerful storm no matter how you slice it.

For what it's worth, NO would not be as bad off it is wasn't for the fact that most of the city is below sea level and the levees broke. WATER DAMAGE! Not so much the wind.
Has anyone figured out yet that the highway infrastructure is not adequate to support the evacuation of 1.4+ million people within 2 -3 days (Anywhere). Do the math.
If you think it's bad now, just wait until all of your neghbors return. Get your siphon hoses or 12 gauges ready as appropriate.

Not a pretty picture if you're supposed to figure out how to stop it.
